With the advent of AIDS, the proliferation of gangs and drugs, and the uneasy sensation that Big Brother is actually watching us, the dark side of urban living seems to be overshadowing the brighter side of pleasure, liberation, and opportunity. The Urbanization of Injustice chronicles these bleak urban images, while taking to task exclusivist politics, globalization theory, and superficial environmentalism. Exploring the links between urbanism, power, and justice, The Urbanization of Injustice presents the thoughts and theories of Edward Soja, David Harvey, Marshall Bermann, Doreen Masey, Sharon Zukin, Susan Fainstein, Ira Katznelson, Nell Smith, and Michael Keith in one cohesive volume, bringing us one step closer to genuinely humane and socially just urban practices.

Born out of the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) was one of the most compelling processes in 20th-century architecture. A pioneering experiment in Europe, it set up technical teams led by architects who, in collaboration with the local population, tried to address the urgent housing needs of communities across the nation. The teams were reinventing architectural practice, from surveying living conditions to monitoring land expropriation, designing projects with the residents directly. This volume includes new essays along with historic texts, an interview with some of the major figures involved, and extensive project documentation.

Torre David is an incomplete skyscraper in the center of the Venezuelan capital Caracas that has been occupied and reconstructed by local residents. Work on the building, named after the financial investor David Brillembourg, who died in 1993, was suspended during the Venezuelan financial crisis of 1994. After the office tower— the third highest in Venezuela—had stood empty for many years, it was taken over by the local population in 2008. The occupants made the building their own with improvisation and skill—it is a "vertical favela," now containing not just housing but also other everyday facilities such as an improvised doctor’s office, shops, and more. Photographer Iwan Baan has documented Torre David and its occupants, creating a portrait that captures the contradictions of the place while at the same time revealing urban structures that have emerged dynamically and without planning. Alfredo Brillembou rg was born in New York in 1961. In 1993 he founded Urban-Think Tank in Caracas, Venezuela. Since May 2010, Brillembourg holds a chair in architecture and urban design at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zürich. Hubert Klumpne r was born in Salzburg in 1965. In 1998 he joined Alfredo Brillembourg as director of Urban-Think Tank in Caracas. Since 2010, Klumpner holds a chair in architecture and urban design at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zürich.

Home to 20 million people and still growing, Greater Cairo mirrors the global phenomenon of unplanned urban growth. Approximately 60 percent of the population of Africa?s biggest city lives in so-called informal housing, typically five-to-ten-story concrete-and-brick-infill structures built without permits in the desert or on former agricultural land. 0The book 'Housing Cairo. The Informal Response' illuminates the architecture of informality and its mechanisms of production through a series of theoretical essays and architectural design proposals. Central to the project is a re-examination of the concept of "informality" itself and its often negative connotations. As the book argues, Cairo?s informal response to housing needs is not a marginal phenomenon, but rather an intelligent, optimized answer to planning incapacities ? an answer that architects and planners should themselves be participating in.
