Abstract

With sales of more than one-half million copies since its original publication in 1951, Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book is one of the most popular regional cookbooks available. Here are nearly 1,000 recipes from the South's finest kitchens--treasured old recipes from southern households, favorite dishes from hotels and restaurants with a tradition of Southern cuisine, and newer recipes that take advantage of prepared products. This edition incorporates many new recipes sent to Mrs. Brown by enthusiastic users of the first edition. Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book retains its true Southern flavor, but it illustrates the increasing cosmopolitanism of the Southern palate. It also takes heed of the fact that today's cook is constantly on the go and needs many simple, easy-to-prepare dishes, and that prepared mixes and packaged and processed foods are an important part of today's preparation of meals. And the recipes themselves have been reorganized and presented in a way that makes them easier to follow for the inexperienced cook. Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book makes the charm and good company of the best Southern cookery available to everyone.

Abstract

Home is our most fundamental human longing. Jen Pollock Michel connects that desire with the story of the Bible, revealing a homemaking God with wide arms of welcome--and a church commissioned with this same work. Keeping Place offers hope to the wanderer, help to the stranded, and a new vision of what it means to live today longing for eternal home.

Abstract

This interesting piece of social history, published in 1899, appears to have been the first non-fiction work by Teresa Praga (d.1920), the wife of a portrait painter and miniaturist, who also published novels. Her later output included books on cookery, housekeeping and dress, many with the emphasis on 'easy' (Easy French Sweets for English Cooks, for example). Like Jane Panton (several of whose books on lifestyle are also reissued in this series), Praga is writing for middle-class wives with not much money, and aspirations to gracious living. Appearances (subtitled How to Keep Them Up on a Limited Income) is presented as autobiography: how a newly married woman, on a very restricted income but used to - and liking - being 'waited on', manages a house. With detailed descriptions of finances, menus, the duties of servants, and other minutiae, this is a light-hearted account of late Victorian housekeeping.
