Includes bibliographical references. Un certain nombre d'auteurs japonais nient la pertinence d'une analyse de classes dans le cas du Japon. Parmi les arguments utilisés comme preuves, quatre sont examinés de façon critique dans cet article : le postulat de l'homogénéité culturelle, l'influence du système de maisonnée traditionnelle, la démocratie industrielle, et le tassement de l'immense majorité des Japonais dans une « grande masse moyenne ». Cet examen nous amène à remettre en question l'hypothèse de l'absence de classes au Japon en montrant, d'une part, les faiblesses des arguments présentés et, d'autre part, divers aspects des inégalités sociales présentes dans la société japonaise actuelle. Some Japanese authors have questioned the possibility of a class analysis of Japanese society. Four of the main reasons given in defense of this position are critically examined in this article : Japanese cultural homogeneity, the influence of the traditional household system, industrial democracy, and the theory that the great majority of Japanese belong to a « great middle mass ». This examination leads us to question the validity of the hypothesis of the absence of social classes in Japan, first, by showing the inadequacies of the arguments presented, and, second, by giving indications pertaining to the presence of social inequalities in contemporary Japanese society.
