This volume of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery covers some important new developments in functional neurosurgery and endovascular therapy. In the Technical Standards section a variety of topics are considered, including optic pathway gliomas, pineal lesions, cavernous sinus meningiomas, and the eternal problem of minor and repetitive head injury. Endovascular treatment of a variety of lesions is now common practice, and the state of the art in endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke is reviewed. An appraisal of the evidence on whether there is a place for microsurgical vascular decompression for essential hypertension raises interesting questions. The volume is completed by contributions on neurosurgical treatment of cluster headaches and occipital nerve stimulation.

This book introduces new concepts and mechanisms regarding the usage of both social media interactions and artifacts for peer education in digital educational games. Digital games in general, and digital educational games in particular, represent an area with a high potential for interdisciplinary innovation, not only from an information technology standpoint, but also from social science, psychological and didactic perspectives. This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to educational games, which is centered on information technology and aims at: (1) improving digital management by focusing on the exchange of learning outcomes and solution assessment in a peer-to-peer network of learners; (2) achieving digital implementation by using forms of interaction to change the course of educational games; and (3) providing digital support by fostering group-formation processes in educational situations to increase both the effects of educational games and knowledge exchange at the individual level. In addition to a systematic analysis of the relationship between software architecture, educational games and social media applications, the book also presents the implemented IT systems' architectures and algorithmic solutions as well as the resulting applicable evaluation findings from the field of interactive multimedia learning.

A straightforward, step-by-step introduction to clear and elegant object-oriented programming. Using a language that's perfect for this kind of programming, the book has been tested in numerous courses and workshops over ten years. Programming Smalltalk is particularly suited for readers with no prior programming knowledge. Starting from the first principles of programming, it teaches you how to use and create algorithms (reusable rules for problem-solving) and the basic building blocks of software. It goes on to explain how to develop complete applications and has a whole chapter on web applications as well as case studies. Now translated into English, this edition was completely revised to be consistent with the latest version of Cincom® VisualWorks®, a professional Smalltalk environment. All examples were created using VisualWorks, which is available without cost for educational purposes, and can be downloaded and installed on any up-to-date computer. Audience • Computer science students (majors and non-majors) in colleges and universities • Advanced secondary school students • Students in job-retraining and continuing education programs • Beginning programmers Author Johannes Brauer is a professor for Programming Methodology at the University of Applied Sciences NORDAKADEMIE in Germany. His background and main research interests are in the fields of programming languages and programming pedagogy. He teaches programming to undergraduates and works with new technologies for teaching, including blended learning.

The story broke in 2006: Since 9/11, US intelligence services have had access to practically any international money transfer data by infiltrating the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) network. Banks worldwide transfer money orders and personal customer data through this network. While the surveillance was all-embracing in 2001, it was gradually limited over the course of the last few years. Revealed by the New York Times, the SWIFT affair has had global as well as national implications. While this dissertation first examines the international dimension of the SWIFT surveillance, the analysis mainly focuses on the national repercussions for Switzerland. This book presents the state of the art in research into atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema, and provides numerous effective practical management recommendations that are grounded in the immense clinical experience of the author. A scientific evidence-based approach to the subject is adopted, progressing from clinical symptoms in different disease stages, molecular genetics, and pathophysiology through to treatment and prevention. All aspects of patient management are covered, including diagnostics, avoidance strategies, emollient therapy, and acute treatment of eczema and itch. Diverse special therapeutic approaches are discussed, ranging from glucocorticoids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, and antimicrobial therapy through to UV therapy, allergen-specific immunotherapy, systemic immunosuppressive therapy, and emerging options. Environmental influences are considered, and there is a focus on the whole human being, with attention to psychosocial aspects of the disease and the benefit of educational programs such as “eczema schools”. Atopic Dermatitis will be invaluable for dermatologists, allergists, pediatricians, and general practitioners and informative for other interested persons and sufferers. .

Johannes Schötz presents the first measurements of optical electro-magnetic near-fields around nanostructures with subcycle-resolution. The ability to measure and understand light-matter interactions on the nanoscale is an important component for the development of light-wave-electronics, the control and steering of electron dynamics with the frequency of light, which promises a speed-up by several orders of magnitude compared to conventional electronics. The experiments presented here on metallic nanotips, widely used in experiments and applications, do not only demonstrate the feasibility of attosecond streaking as a unique tool for fundamental studies of ultrafast nanophotonics but also represent a first important step towards this goal. Contents Electron Scattering in Solids Attosecond Streaking from Metal Nanotips Target Groups Lecturers and students of physics, especially in the area of nanophotonics and attosecond physics About the Author Johannes Schötz received his Master's degree in physics and currently works as a PhD student in the field of ultrafast nanophotonics at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics Garching.

The UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, with its key topics of global warming and deteriorating air quality, will speed up the advance of electric mobility. CO2-neutral and zero-emission mobility require electricity to be generated from regenerative sources of energy. Power generation from wind and solar energy, however is dependent on the weather and is therefore not stable. The irregularities that occur in nature can result in unacceptable voltage fluctuations in the power grid. For that reason, the availability of highly flexible loads and storage systems is becoming particularly important. Electric vehicles, with their grid-relevant properties as controllable power consumers and electricity storage systems, could help to stabilize future power grids. The protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) is a contentious issue in developing and emerging economies. While countries like China are often reluctant to strengthen IPRs, industrialized countries complain about welfare losses in their markets due to foreign counterfeiting and piracy. In this context, Johannes Liegsalz empirically analyzes the legal framework and the economic relevance of patents in the People’s Republic of China. His results show that IPRs play a vital role in contemporary China and that they have a positive impact on international trade flows and foreign direct investments.
