In 'Caring', Peta Bowden extends and challenges recent debates on feminist ethics. She takes issue with accounts of the ethics of care that focus on alleged basic principles of caring rather than analysing caring in practice. Caring, Bowden argues, must be understood by 'working through examples'. Following this approach, Bowden explores four main caring practices : mothering, friendship, nursing and citizenship. Her analysis of the differences and similarities in these practices - their varying degrees of intimacy and reciprocity, formality and informality, vulnerability and choice - reveals the practical complexity of the ethics of care. 'Caring' recognizes that ethical practices constantly outrun the theories that attempt to explain them, and Bowden's unique approach provides major new insights into the nature of care without resorting to indiscriminate unitary models. It will be essential reading for all those interested in ethics, gender studies, nursing and the caring professions. Peta Bowden is lecturer in philosophy at Murdoch university, Western Australia.

Nursing ideals and analytical philosophy rarely overlap. As a result, existing nursing codes fail to define key terms clearly enough to enable nurses to apply them. David Seedhouse tackles this problem by looking at nine key concept, explains their meaning and shows how they can be applied in everyday situations. The result is a precise yet compassionate framework which enables nurses to reflect deeply about the importance of their work, and can suipport them as they strive to make ethically sound decisions. aeo Provides a practical approach to traditionally intangible health care issues aeo Includes an array of accessible case studies and diagrams aeo Offers sensible strategies for nurses to implement philisophical insights in their daily care Any nurse, or other health care worker, who has wondered how best to apply key words such as a carea , a dignitya and a ethicsa in everyday situations will find this practical and informed clarification indispensible. This book provides the definitive Code of Nursing Practice, clarifying the nine words that are central to nursing -- advocacy, care, dignity, holism, separatism, research, ethics, health, and nursing itself. Each keyword is clearly defined and comprehensively illustrated with down--to--earth nursing/health care examples.

Since Carol Gilligan's in a Different Voice (1982) the ethics of care has developed as a movement of allied thinkers, in different continents, who have a shared concern and who reflect on similar topics. This shared concern is that care can only be revalued and take its societal place if existing asymmetrical power relations are unveiled, and if the dignity of care givers and care receivers is better guaranteed, socially, politically and personally. In this first volume of a new series leading care ethicists from Europe and the United States focus on the moral significance of two concepts in the devate that ask for further reflection. In discussion with the work of Axel Honneth on recognition and the work of Emmanuel Housset on compassion from an ethics of care perspective.
