Abstract

Strike a Pose documents a new extroverted architectural language. Manifested in spectacular structures, eccentric forms and vivid colours, this expressive approach goes way beyond conventional stylistic and geographic boundaries. Strike a Pose leads the reader around the globe to iconographically charged scenes and futuristic spaces, with examples of architectural playfulness and experimental wanderlust ranging from private residences to schools and operas, museums and interior design.

Abstract

The German Architecture Annual has been documenting contemporary architectural projects in Germany for almost 40 years. This year’s edition of the annual, with contributions by renowned authors, presents the shortlist of 26 buildings selected by a jury for the 2020 DAM Prize for Architecture in Germany. Architects, architectural critics, and curators of the museum visited around 100 nominated buildings to determine the shortlist. The volume also offers a portrait of three outstanding projects by German architects realized in a foreign country. This year’s winner of the DAM Prize is the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin by the London-based practice David Chipperfield Architects. The finalists included: the new taz building in Berlin by EA Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert Architekten; the entrance building for the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum in Großweil (Upper Bavaria) by Florian Nagler Architekten; a new mixed-use development overlooking the Peterskirchhof cemetary in Frankfurt am Main by NKBAK Architekten; and the residential building ‘einfach gebaut’ in Berlin by orange architekten. The book also offers an in-depth interview with architect Peter Wilson on the challenges of building in Albania as well as an essay by Reiner Nagel on the importance of engaging with rural places. Bilingual edition in German & English.

Abstract

Sensing Place' is a reflection on 20 years of Gumuchdjian Architects in practice. The principal architect, Philip Gumuchdjian sets out the thinking behind his projects with a view to re-stating the relevance of architecture in an increasingly virtual, image driven world. The book is thus a manual designed to guide the general public through the many concurrent and competing ideas that underpin a typical body of architectural work. These include the importance of keeping the culture of the past closely with us; the imperative of instilling buildings with the capacity to connect people to places; and how shared space is the real engine of community.

Abstract

Modernity and religion are not mutually exclusive. Setting German and Irish church, synagogue and mosque architecture side by side over the last century highlights the place for the celebration of the new within faiths whose appeal lies in part in the stability of belief they offer across time. Inspired by radically modern German churches of the 1920s and 1930s, this volume offers new insights into designers of all three types of sacred buildings, working at home and abroad. It offers new scholarship on the unknown phenomenon of mid-century ecclesiastical architecture in sub-Saharan Africa by Irish designers; a critical appraisal of the overlooked Frank Lloyd Wright-trained Andrew Devane and an analysis of accommodating difficult pasts and challenging futures with contemporary synagogue and mosque architecture in Germany. With a focus on influence and processes, alongside conservationists and historians, it features critical insights by the designers of some of the most celebrated contemporary sacred buildings, including Niall McLaughlin who writes on his multiple award-winning Bishop Edward King Chapel and Amandus Sattler, architect of the innovative Herz-Jesu-Kirche, Munich.

Abstract

Criticism has fallen into crisis, and today’s critical practice mistrusts its own tools—a development that also applies to critique in architecture. For a major part of the twentieth century, critique played an important part in what was considered “modern” architecture. The canon of modern architecture considered itself dedicated to both progress and social critique. As an antithesis to this, the 1960s introduced a rereading of modern architecture from the perspective of new social movements and Marxism, concluding that a building practice cannot be critical, owing to its interdependent relationship with power and business. With the recent economic crisis hitting the building and property sector, and research defining new architectural practices, we are witnessing a renewed interest in critique, informed by postcolonial and feminist positions. Far from being dead, critique turns out to be indispensable, as is argued in the essays contained in this book.
