English Der Papst als Antichrist explores the late medieval eschatological framing and the apocalyptic enemy stereotypes, which progressively corroborated the conviction that evil was to take possession of the highest ecclesiastical offices at the end of time. Nelly Ficzel observes a master narrative – established in the aftermath of Joachim of Fiore and first reflected in his spurious works during the thirteenth century – that heavily effected the paradigms of soteriological alignment: This narrative located the powers of the apocalypse within the Christian community of the Latin West and handed the task of rescuing the Christian message over to an apocalyptic elite which had yet to be defined and would - at the crucial moment - be ready and willing to oppose Rome.

The present volume discusses the earliest Christian views on eschatological opponents and their backgrounds in contemporary Judaism. It treats the rich variety of early Christian speculations on the subject and shows that, within this variety, a continuity with Jewish speculations is to be discerned. Part One of this book treats the early Christian passages of the period up to Irenaeus that contain speculations on the coming of an eschatological opponent. Part Two offers a survey of Jewish expectations that formed the basis for the Christian speculations discussed. After the General Conclusion the book finishes with an extensive Bibliography and an Index. The book is of interest to any student of early Christian eschatology and the continuity between early Christianity and contemporary Judaism.

This study examines expectations of imminent judgment that energized reform movements in Late Medieval and Reformation Europe. It probes the apocalyptic vision of the Lollards, followers of the Oxford professor John Wycliff (1384). The Lollards repudiated the medieval church and established conventicles despite officially sanctioned prosecution. While exploring the full spectrum of late medieval apocalypticism, this work focuses on the diverse range of Wycliffite literature, political and religious treatises, sermons, biblical commentaries, including trial records, to reveal a dynamic strain of apocalyptic discourse. It shows that sixteenth-century English apocalypticism was fed by vibrant, indigenous Wycliffite well springs. The rhetoric of Lollard apocalypticism is analyzed and its effect on carriers and audiences is investigated, illuminating the rise of evil in church and society as perceived by the Lollards and their radical reform program.
