Je rêve d'être délivrée, mais voilà, dans le pays des droits de l'homme, je n'ai pas le droit de choisir ma fin de vie. J'abrégerai donc mon existence au lieu d'avoir droit à une fin choisie. Je vous supplie de lire cette lettre jusqu'au bout afin que mon acte délibéré serve à faire avancer ce combat. " Aujourd'hui, l'allongement de la durée de vie a trop souvent pour corollaire l'acharnement thérapeutique. Certaines personnes qui, en toute lucidité, demandent à mourir, se voient opposer un refus proche de l'abus de pouvoir. Catherine Leguay, militante de l'Association pour le droit de mourir dans la dignité, a recueilli les témoignages de ceux qui souffrent de ce que le droit à l'euthanasie soit interdit par la loi. Pourtant, légiférer permettrait de respecter les désirs des malades, mais aussi de les protéger. Au cœur de ces témoignages, ceux des proches et des patients de Bernard Senet. Médecin généraliste, il relate les moments passés avec des malades qu'il a suivis pendant des mois et qu'il a un jour accompagnés dans la mort. Il brise ainsi ce tabou que représente, pour une grande partie du corps médical, la possibilité d'accéder à la volonté affirmée et réitérée d'un patient en l'aidant à mourir. Philosophe, André Comte-Sponville développe une réflexion sur la mort, ce prolongement naturel de l'existence désormais nié par notre société. Il démonte l'hypocrisie des discours et nous contraint à repenser cette grande aventure qu'est pour tout homme la vie comme la mort : " Celui qui voulut vivre libre, pourquoi devrait-il mourir esclave ? Celui qui voulut vivre tout entier, pourquoi devrait-il mourir en morceaux ? " Forts de leurs expériences respectives, ces trois humanistes, éclairant le douloureux mais nécessaire débat sur l'euthanasie, permettent d'en comprendre les enjeux humains, médicaux et légaux.

Ce livre s'adresse principalement aux juristes, aux philosophes et aux bioéthiciens qui s'intéressent à la poussée expérimentale qui obsède les techniques médicales modernes. Il constitue une application de l'oeuvre du juriste Pierre Legendre sur la question des xénogreffes. Doublement ambitieux, l'ouvrage relie un commentaire du travail du plus important juriste francophone moderne et un problème tragique : celui de pallier par des organes de porc la pénurie d'organes humains à greffer.Cette approche inédite tend à faire apparaître le caractère idéologique de ce soin médical de pointe. Elle exige en outre du droit un ressaisissement quant à sa portée dogmatique plutôt que sa réduction à une technique secrétariale savante. Ce travail soulève, au-delà de l'évocation, la dangerosité virale pour la société non consentante à des contacts entre les espèces (la mutualisation du risque), la question des principes juridiques tenant le système du droit civil en état : la dignité de la personne humaine, son intégrité dans l'espèce. Une question de principe qui devrait marquer la limite à cette expérimentation médicale, même si celle-ci devait s'avérer techniquement praticable ou virologiquement neutre. Finalement, cet ouvrage adresse pour la première fois au grand public les questions éthiques véritables relatives à cette technique médicale.
