The book "Material Skills, evolution of materials" describes the evolution of materials in terms of their historical development and presents a vision of the future. It assists designers to become aware of their inheritance and inspires them to use new materials in their work. The chapters cover the basic principles of working with timber and provide detailed information on subjects such as thermal performance, sound insulation and fire protection. There is also a chapter devoted to the ecological significance of wood. Timber as a loadbearing material is considered and topics such as new methods of jointing, transport and erection are documented. The second part of the book presents a large number of built examples, which feature some classic structures but focus chiefly on more recent buildings. These are presented with full illustrations, details and plans which depict solutions as built for various loadbearing systems. The spectrum of timber structures presented ranges from heavy-duty bridges to multi-storey residential buildings and the magnificent Expo roof. The second chapter of examples deals specifically with topics such as facades, building envelope etc. All drawings and illustrations have been carefully produced to ensure that the details and methods of construction documented are clear and comprehensible.

Eine Übersicht für Architekten, die auch die Bedeutung der Baustoffwahl für die sinnliche Wahrnehmung von Architektur wie Haptik, Geruch, Farbe, Oberflächenstruktur berücksichtigt, gab es bisher nicht. Mit dem Baustoff Atlas wird diese Lücke nun geschlossen. Als ein auf die Interessen von Architekten und Bauingenieuren gleichermassen abgestimmtes Grundlagenwerk wird er alle genannten Betrachtungsebenen vereinen. Dabei werden sowohl grundsätzliche Nachhaltigkeitsfragen wie Lebensdauer, Umweltbelastung und Stoffkreisläufe erörtert als auch Materialinnovationen vorgestellt. Alle wesentlichen herkömmlichen und neuartigen Baustoffe werden hinsichtlich Herstellung, Verarbeitung, Oberflächen, Anschlüssen und Kenndaten umfassend dokumentiert. Until now, the few existing systematic texts on construction materials have primarily been directed at building engineers. An overview for architects, which also considers the importance of construction materials in the sensory perception of architecture-including tactile qualities, smell, color, and surface structure-has not been available.With the publication of the Construction Materials Manual, all that has changed. As a basic work aimed equally at the questions and perspectives of architects and building engineers, it will bring together all of the above-mentioned viewpoints. It addresses fundamental questions of sustainability, including life-span, environmental impact, and material cycles, while also presenting material innovations. All of the principal conventional and innovative construction materials are comprehensively documented, with attention to their production, manufacture, fabrication, treatment, surfaces, connections, and characteristics. International examples help to illustrate their use in architecture, where a building's appearance is often defined by a single material. Thus, the Construction Materials Manual will support the daily work of architects and engineers in the choice of construction materials in a comprehensive and at the same time vivid and stimulating manner.

Steel is one of the most versatile materials available in the construction industry and its many applications have enabled architects and engineers to go far beyond what was once considered possible. This volume documents all aspects of steels as a construction material, first looking at the historical development of building with steel. This is followed by several chapters which examine to a high degree of technical detail the physical properties of the material, the principles of construction utilizing steel and the wide range of steel elements and their applications. The final chapter presents 54 examples which illustrate the many applications of steel in construction - from simple halls to complex multistorey buildings. These examples were selected because of their innovative use of steel, demonstrating its great potential for minimising the materials and montage necessary. For ease of comparison all the plans have been drawn to the same scale. The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography and a listing of the relevant norms and standards.
