Ook al wordt het Arabisch traditioneel niet als een Afrikaanse taal beschouwd, toch is de Arabische taal een van de meest verspreide talen in Afrika, zowel op het vlak van het aantal gebruikers als in termen van territiorale verspreiding. Bovendien hebben Arabieren gedurende honderden jaren in de nabijheid geleefd van Afrikaanse volkeren en heeft hun aanwezigheid dikwijls een grote invloed gehad op de cultuur en de taal binnen Afrikaanse samenlevingen. Sommige volkeren ruilden hun taal in voor het Arabisch. Dit geldt voor de Kopten in Egypte en de Berber-bevolking in Libië, Tunesië en de Maghreb. In andere regio's zijn de Arabieren een etnische groep naast andere etnische groepen gebleven. Een van deze regio's is de streek rond het Tsjaad-meer waar Engelsen in 1823-1824 op de Shuwa-Arabieren stootten. De bijdragen in voorliggend boek doen onderzoek naar de herkomst van de Arabieren en het gebruik van het Arabisch rond het Tsjaad-meer.

Dit boek onderzoekt hoe de Verenigde Naties omgaan met het probleem van de inheemse volkeren. De invalshoek is hierbij het internationaal recht, meer bepaald de internationale standaarden voor de bescherming van de mensenrechten. Na een hoofdstuk over de verhouding tussen internationaal en nationaal recht, wordt nagegaan welke garanties het VN-handvest voor de inheemse volkeren biedt en worden de activiteiten van de VN-Werkgroep voor Inheemse Volkeren geëvalueerd. Vervolgens komen de internationale mensenrechtenverdragen die binnen de VN tot stand kwamen aan bod. Een derde deel gaat in op de periodieke rapportering i.v.m. deze verdragen. In een laatste deel wordt in het bijzonder aandacht besteed aan de Covenant over Burgerlijke en Politieke Rechten en aan de Conventie over het uitbannen van Rassendiscriminatie.
