Abstract

"Biology, which not long ago was purely descriptive and speculative, has begun to adopt the methods of the exact sciences, recognizing that for permanent progress not only experiments are required but that the experiments should be of a quantitative character. It will be the purpose of this series of monographs to emphasize and further as much as possible this development of Biology. Experimental Biology and General Physiology are one and the same science, by method as well as by contents, since both aim at explaining life from the physico-chemical constitution of living matter. The series of monographs on Experimental Biology will therefore include the field of traditional General Physiology"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"This book contains the results of my studies in the intelligence of Apes at the Anthropoid Station in Tenerife from the years 1913-1917. The original, which appeared in 1917, has been out of print for some time. I have taken this opportunity of making a few changes in the critical and explanatory sections, and have added as an Appendix some general considerations on the Psychology of Chimpanzees. With various recent books and essays on the subject I shall have an opportunity of dealing in a further contribution to the subject not yet completed".

Abstract

"In December and January of 1911-1912 I delivered the Christmas Course of Lectures, "adapted to a Juvenile Auditory," at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and took as my subject " The Childhood of Animals." The six lectures were not written; they shaped themselves as the course proceeded, partly in relation to the set of lantern-slides, specimens and living animals that I was able to bring, and partly in accordance with the advice of my kind and experienced friend Sir James Dewar. This book is not a printed version of the lectures, although it tells the same story in a different fashion. A lecture must be as direct and as little cumbered with detail as may be; the leaves of a book can be turned backwards and forwards, and its lines skipped or re-read. I have therefore been able to include many details that I had to omit when I was speaking, and to cover my canvas in a different way. In particular, I am no longer trying to address a juvenile auditory; I have attempted to avoid the use of terms familiar only to students of zoology, and to refrain from anatomical detail, but at the same time to refrain from the irritating habit of assuming that my readers have no knowledge, no dictionaries and no other books. My object has been to bring together observations old and new that seemed to throw a light on the nature of the period in the life-history of animals between birth and maturity, rather than to write a formal treatise on the subject. I have not found it possible, nor have I tried to keep strictly within the logical confines of the title. Where the subject seemed to lead, there I have followed cheerfully, remembering that I am not preparing readers for an examination where no marks will be assigned to extraneous matter"--Preface. Abstract

Brain and behaviour are intrinsically linked. Animals demonstrate a huge and complex repertoire of behaviours, so how can specific behaviours be mapped onto the complicated neural circuits of the brain? Highlighting the extraordinary advances that have been made in the field of behavioural neuroscience over recent decades, this book examines how behaviours can be understood in terms of their neural mechanisms. Each chapter outlines the components of a particular behaviour, discussing laboratory techniques, the key brain structures involved, and the underpinning cellular and molecular mechanisms. Commins covers a range of topics including learning in a simple invertebrate, fear conditioning, taste aversion, sound localization, and echolocation in bats, as well as more complex behaviours, such as language development, spatial navigation and circadian rhythms. Demonstrating key processes through clear, step-by-step explanations and numerous illustrations, this will be valuable reading for students of zoology, animal behaviour, psychology, and neuroscience.

Abstract

Abstract

"The present work was designed primarily as an objective description of the known facts of behavior in lower organisms, that might be used, not only by the general reader, but also as a companion in actual laboratory experimentation. This description, comprising Parts I and II of the present work, on the Protozoa and lower Metazoa, respectively, was made as far as possible independent of any theoretical views held by the writer; his ideal was indeed to present an account that would include the facts required for a refutation of any of his own general views, if such refutation is possible. As originally written, this descriptive portion of the work was more extensive, including, besides the behavior of the Protozoa and Coelenterata, systematic accounts of behavior in Echinoderms, Rotifera, and the lower worms, together with a general chapter on the behavior of other invertebrates. The work was planned to serve as a reference manual for the behavior of the groups treated. But the exigencies of space compelled the substitution of a chapter on some important features of behavior in other invertebrates for the systematic accounts of the three groups last mentioned. The conclusions set forth in Part III are the result of a deliberate analysis of the facts presented in a description which had been made before the conclusions had been drawn. Since the book is written primarily from a zoological standpoint, it would be appropriate in some respects to entitle it "Behavior of the Lower Animals." But the broader title seems on the whole best, since the treatment of unicellular forms involves consideration of many organisms that are more nearly related to plants than to animals"--Preface (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"Zoology has not been renowned for a paucity of methods or viewpoints. Some workers have approached ecological problems from a theoretical, mathematical standpoint; others have been decidedly pragmatic and empirical. A few have even proven able to reconcile these often divergent approaches within the scope of some particularly masterful study. Yet, for all the diversity in the approaches to the major problems of ecology, there has been a striking neglect of psychological factors that control or regulate the behavior of animals. This bald assertion is not intended to minimize the frequency, importance, or value of specific behavioral studies which seek to explain habitat selection, food preferences, or the like. What is lacking is a more general account of the relation between the principles and facts studied by psychologists and those of interest to ecologists. In this short book, we hope to summarize what we consider to be the major problems of ecology and to suggest how the application of psychological viewpoints can contribute to our understanding of them. Our approach is frankly speculative, for the present need seems to be for a suggestion of the nature of the rapprochement of ecology and psychology rather than for an exhaustive review of the areas of overlap. What, then, are the ecologist's fundamental problems? These have traditionally dealt with the manner in which a finite amount of space and energy is distributed among species, as well as with a temporal dimension of this distribution. We may restate these problems colloquially: 1. Why don't predators overeat their prey? 2. How are space and food shared? 3. Why are there so many species? 4. How do species remain distinct? These seemingly simple queries, as a moment's reflection will show, require a consideration of competition, trophic levels and energy exchange, community stability, niche diversification, speciation, and those related topics which comprise the entire field of ecology. By casting our questions in this particular form, the strictly behavioral problems in ecology can be best outlined"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved).
