This volume contains thirteen essays written between 1900 and today. Each of them takes as its starting point the Gospel of John as a literary unity. The volume as a whole traces literary studies of John back to the early 1900's and charts their development from then. Some of these essays are little known even to Johannine scholars. Others are recognized as classics in the field. Two of them are translations. This book is therefore a timely and indispensable resource for those interested in the history of the fourth gospel interpretation, and in examples of literary methods applied to John.

"Read often, learn all that you can. Let sleep overcome you, the roll still in your hands; when your head falls, let it be on the sacred page." (St Jerome, 384 AD). With these words, the Church Father Jerome exhorted the young Eustochium to find on the sacred page the spiritual nourishment that would give her the strength to live a life of chastity and to keep her monastic vows. His call to read does not stand alone. Books and reading have always played a pivotal role in early and medieval Christianity, often defined as ‘a religion of the book’.A second important stage in the development of the ‘religion of the book’ can be attested in the late Middle Ages, when religious reading was no longer the exclusive right of men and women living in solitude and concentrating on prayer and meditation. Changes in the religious landscape and the birth of new religious movements transformed the medieval town into a privileged area of religious activity. Increasing literacy opened the door to a new and wider public of lay readers. This seminal transformation in the late medieval cultural horizon saw the growing importance of the vernacular, the cultural and religious emancipation of the laity, and the increasing participation of lay people in religious life and activities. This volume presents a new, interdisciplinary approach to religious reading and reading techniques in a lay environment within late medieval textual, social, and cultural transformations.

A rigorous analysis of Mark 6:45-56 (Jesus' sea-walk). The first part of the book argues that, given the complexities which challenge the reader in Mark 6:45-56, traditional historical-critical approaches lack the terminology and conceptual categories necessary to provide an adequate elucidation of the passage in all its fantastic array. The second part proposes a theoretical framework for scholars to examine the Gospel of Mark using tools and terms often associated with fantasy literature, and suggests that this gospel is best viewed as an illustration of ancient fantastic fiction. The final part of the book shows how the tools of fantasy studies can be applied to the gospel, using Mark 6:45-56 as a case in point.

This study subjects the conventional processes of literary criticism to a critical analysis which shows up the weaknesses of arguments from literary criticism in the Old Testament. It explores new ways for literary criticism using a concept of text derived from modern literary theories together with statistical procedures for the examination of style.
