Stem cells are self-replicating and undifferentiated, meaning their function is not yet cell, tissue, or organ-specific. Due to the unique nature of these cells, research into their biology and function holds great promise for therapeutic applications through replacement or repair of diseased and damaged cells. This reader-friendly manual provides a practical "hands on" guide to the culture of human embryonic and somatic stem cells. By presenting methods for embryonic and adult lines side-by-side, the authors lay out an elegant and unique path to understanding the science of stem cell practice. The authors begin with a broad-based introduction to the field, and also review legal and regulatory issues and patents. Each experimental strategy is presented with an historical introduction, detailed method, discussion of alternative methods, and common pitfalls. This lab guide for researchers also serves as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in laboratory courses.

Around the age of six the first permanent teeth emerge, i.e. they become visible in the mouth. Not only the timing, also the pattern of tooth emergence is of interest in dental practice to help in diagnosis and treatment planning. However, the timing of tooth emergence is often not observed exactly, e.g. in an (epidemiological) study, only at a visit to the dentist it is observed whether a tooth has emerged or not. Since the timing of tooth emergence is not exactly known, as it lies in between two visits to the dentist, tooth emergence is an "interval censored'' phenomenon. When a tooth has not yet emerged at the last visit before the study ends, it is a "right censored" observation. Similarly, if a tooth has already emerged at the first visit, it is called a "left censored" observation. Questions about patterns of tooth emergence lead to the analysis of multivariate interval censored data because the emergence times of several teeth of one child can not be assumed to be independent from each other. There are two classes of questions depending on whether the association between the emergence times of different teeth is of interest. Firstly, we analysed several dental questions for which the dependence structure was not really of importance such as ``Is there a left-right symmetry with respect to the mean (median) emergence times?". Secondly, in order to get more insight in the tooth emergence patterns, we focused on the association between the emergence times leading to the analysis of the bivariate (or multivariate) density of the emergence times. Several approaches like the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimate, a smooth estimate and a copula approach were investigated. For these estimates, we looked at different measures to describe the association both globally and locally.

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a core technique for analysing data in the Life Sciences. This reference book bridges the gap between statistical theory and practical data analysis by presenting a comprehensive set of tables for all standard models of analysis of variance and covariance with up to three treatment factors. The book will serve as a tool to help post-graduates and professionals define their hypotheses, design appropriate experiments, translate them into a statistical model, validate the output from statistics packages and verify results. The systematic layout makes it easy for readers to identify which types of model best fit the themes they are investigating, and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative experimental designs. In addition, a concise introduction to the principles of analysis of variance and covariance is provided, alongside worked examples illustrating issues and decisions faced by analysts.
