Concrete is the most used man-made material in the world and is the fundamental physical medium for most of the world's architecture and construction. The character of concrete is largely the product of the rigid moulds that have shaped it since its invention in antiquity. The advent of flexible moulds, however, marks a radical break from conventional practice - and conventional concrete architecture. This handbook takes a comprehensive and generous approach that includes technical, historical and theoretical aspects of the subject.

"Breaks new ground by charting concrete's effects on culture since its reinvention in the modern period, examining the ways it has changed our understanding of nature, of time and of materiality. This book discusses architects' responses to and uses of concrete while also taking into account the role it has played in politics, literature, cinema and labour relations, as well as in present-day arguments about sustainability." -- Book jacket.

Concrete takes a fresh look at the world's most versatile and abundant building material. Collating fascinating and beautiful concrete buildings by some of the most celebrated architects of the last century, it features familiar projects from Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright alongside work from some of the leading lights of contemporary architecture including Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, and many lesser-known newcomers. Arranged to promote comparison and discussion, the selected projects take the reader on a global tour of inspiring and intriguing structures: a German skatepark sits beside an Italian rooftop test track, a Japanese crematorium alongside a Portuguese swimming pool and a Brazilian government building next to a Chinese opera house. Illustrated with extraordinary photographs, each project includes an extended caption providing a commentary on the building. An essay by Leonard Koren, author of the best-selling Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, offers an evocative and perceptive view of concrete through the author's experience of studying architecture in California and living in Tokyo. Concrete is a beautiful and informative visual exploration of a material often considered dull and cold but actually full of spectacular potential.

With its virtually infinite plasticity, its constructional versatility, and its simple and straightforward building technology, concrete is the building material of the present. In addition to careful design and constructional planning, the invitation of bids and the building contract are the keys to a successful implementation. Building with Concrete provides the basic information needed to work with the material, with special attention to the architect's role in planning and construction management. It describes current trends in concrete technology and the development of innovative new types of concrete, with firsthand reports by architects in the field. It also describes the new version of the DBV/BDZ data sheet "Exposed Concrete."

Detail in Contemporary Concrete Architecture provides analysis of both the technical and the aesthetic importance of details in modern concrete architecture. Featuring the work of renowned architects from around the world, this book presents 49 of the most recently completed and influential concrete designs for both residential and commercial architecture. The projects are presented in clear and concise layouts over four pages. All of the drawings are styled consistently and presented at standard architectural scales to allow for easy comparison. Each project is presented with colour photographs, site plans and sections and elevations, as well as numerous construction details. There is also descriptive text, detailed captions and in-depth information for each project. A bonus CD-ROM contains drawings from the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.
