No matter where we are and what we are doing, steel is always present in our lives, at work or in our leisure time, sometimes even as a work of art. Steel is indispensable, recyclable and has a very special significance: In our modern industrial society, steel is the basic material for all important industrial sectors, such as automotive and shipbuilding, apparatus and mechanical engineering, bridge and structural steel engineering, energy and environmental technology, the packaging industry, the household and sports industry, medical technology, hydraulics and pneumatics, and many more. Today, the large-scale production and processing of steel is state of the art and the variety of steels developed is impressive. This world of steel is constantly evolving and has become astonishingly diverse, indeed so complex that it is not easy to keep track of in practice. The aim is to give the reader an understanding of this world, not in a highly scientific way, but in a technically correct and easily understandable way: from steel production, ingot and continuous casting, forming and mechanical processing to finishing, testing and packaging of the products, the processes and equipment predominantly used throughout, including the environmentally compatible recycling and disposal of waste. Interesting applications will also be highlighted. The target groups Students, practitioners, engineers and anyone interested in the history of technology. The content Systematization of materials - The material steel - Alloying elements and steel properties - Steel production - Forming - Heat treatment of steel - Materials testing - Production engineering processes - Finishing - By-products and waste - Steel in everyday life - Steel in the future - Chronological table on iron and steel - Glossary The author Dr.-Ing. Joachim Schlegel: Steel shaped his professional life as a mechanical engineer, rolling mill operator, researcher, salesman, product manager, customer consultant and lecturer (continuing education).

This book presents an innovative methodology to fabricate nanostructured piezoelectric composite fibers with wearable technologies application as an energy generator and/or sensors. It reports on methods of piezoelectric fiber formation and development of novel textile structures (weave, knit, braid, coil) with embedded electrodes. The flexibility and small diameter of the final fiber make it possible to use them in garment without affecting structure of comfort. The performance of the fiber generators was evaluated through different applications such as air and water sensor, health and movement monitoring, and energy generator. The book targets a wide readership including materials scientists, electrical engineering, soft robotics, Internet of things, electronic textiles, and wearable technology

This book explores wind-adaptive architectural design blending the parametric design with digital simulations and suggests a novel approach for specific, even extreme conditions, as the first step in creating architecture that can act in response to the nature around. The chapters propose an urban and architectural design that emerges from the specific wind microclimate of the design site and responds to the changes in the ambient wind conditions. The book looks closely at A) the interdisciplinary wind-driven design method for architects, engineers, and urbanists employing open-source software for CFD analysis and B) the tensegrity-membrane adaptive building façades. The main questions the authors try to answer are: How does the wind-driven methodology enhance the wind comfort around buildings? How can it contribute to the reduction of wind surface loads acting on buildings?

Themen: Baustoff Holz Holzschutz Holzbausysteme Bauteile von der Gründung bis zum Dach Together with masonry construction, timber construction is usually one of the first building exercises encountered by the student in his or her training. This volume begins by presenting the building material timber in all of its facets and explaining the fundamental principles of timber construction. It then goes on to describe the most important building components and their constructive possibilities, specifically as they pertain to building with timber. Subjects: Timber as building material, Timber preservation, Systems for building with timber, Building components from foundation to roof.
