The architectural jewel of Constantinople is the church of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom), constructed 532-537 CE. Although the edifice built by Justinian remains almost intact, only some of its original mosaics survive. In the first comprehensive study, Natalia Teteriatnikov describes the original mosaic program of the church and its restorations after the earthquake of 558. Drawing from decades of her personal research and scholarship on St. Sophia, the author analyzes the material and decorative components of the Justinianic mosaics that survive. She considers the architectural and theological aesthetics, as well as the social conditions that led to the production of a distinctive, aniconic mosaic program. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes a catalog of the nineteenth-century watercolors created by Gaspare Fossati--the only surviving evidence for reconstructing mosaics that are no longer extant.--Summary by Harvard University Press.

In Byzantium the epigram as a genre was highly appreciated. Their analysis is the aim of the four planned volumes of the project “Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Überlieferung” [“Byzantine epigrams on objects”]. More than 300 and such epigrams preserved on stone, which are treated in the present third volume, are known from the project period 600 AD to 1500 AD.

Patristic thinking is the bedrock of the uniformity of Byzantine culture, legitimization of image use in the Eastern Church, as well as Byzantine aesthetics, Karahan argues. The synergy in Late Byzantine holy images of "meta-images" for God's inexplicability, and elaborated dramatized narration for God's immanence epitomize orthodox tradition in general, and in particular fourth-century Cappadocian modes and models of thought on Christology, trinitarian theology and the Theotokos. The incomprehensible, uncircumscribed invisible Trinity, and the comprehensible God-man born of the Theotokos, circumscribed in flesh but not in divinity is a one-God reality of transcendent ontology and actions in the world of the two-natured image of God, Christ. Explanations in words or in images can not ignore these orthodox axioms without turning into false images or heretic idols. This book explores why and how the idiosyncratic use of color, form, kinetics, light, and brilliance in Late Byzantine aesthetics concur with the tradition of the Fathers. How narration in image as well as literature is orthodoxos, "of right belief, orthodox".
