Abstract

Studies of religion have a tendency to conceptualise 'the Spirit' and 'the Letter' as mutually exclusive and intrinsically antagonistic. However, the history of religions abounds in cases where charismatic leaders deliberately refer to and make use of writings. This book challenges prevailing scholarly notions of the relationship between 'charisma' and 'institution' by analysing reading and writing practices in contemporary Christianity. Taking up the continuing anthropological interest in Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity, and representing the first book-length treatment of literacy practi

Abstract

Over the past century, Branson, Missouri, has attracted tens of millions of tourists. Nestled in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, it offers a rare and refreshing combination of natural beauty and family-friendly recreation—from scenic lakes and rolling hills to theme parks and variety shows. It has boasted of big name celebrities, like Wayne Newton, Andy Williams, and Petula Clark, as well as family entertainers like Mickey Gilley, the Shanghai Magic Troupe, Jim Stafford, and Yakov Smirnoff. But there is more to Branson's fame than just recreation. As Aaron K. Ketchell discovers, a popular variant of Christianity underscores all Branson's tourist attractions and fortifies every consumer success. In this lively and engaging study, Ketchell explores Branson's unique blend of religion and recreation. He explains how the city became a mecca of conservative Christianity—a place for a "spiritual vacation"—and how, through conscious effort, its residents and businesses continuously reinforce its inextricable connection with the divine. Ketchell combines the study of lived religion, popular culture, evangelicalism, and contemporary American history to present an accurate and honest account of a distinctly American phenomenon.

Abstract

This history of Protestant pastoral counseling in America examines the role of pastoral counselors in the construction and articulation of a liberal moral sensibility. Analyzing the relationship between religion and science in the twentieth century, Susan E. Myers-Shirk locates this sensibility in the counselors’ intellectual engagement with the psychological sciences. Informed by the principles of psychology and psychoanalysis, pastoral counselors sought a middle ground between science and Christianity in advising anxious parishioners who sought their help for personal problems such as troubled children, violent spouses, and alcohol and drug abuse. Myers-Shirk finds that gender relations account in part for the great divide between the liberal and conservative moral sensibilities in pastoral counseling. She demonstrates that, as some pastoral counselors began to advocate women’s equality, conservative Christian counselors emerged, denouncing more liberal pastoral counselors and secular psychologists for disregarding biblical teachings. From there, the two sides diverged dramatically. Helping the Good Shepherd will appeal to scholars of American religious history, the history of psychology, gender studies, and American history. For those practicing and teaching pastoral counseling, it offers historical insights into the field.

Abstract

Abstract

In this ground-breaking volume, the authors explore two sides of religion: the ways in which it contributes to violence against women and girls (VAWG) and the ways it counters it. Recognising the very real impact of religion on the lives of women and girls, it prioritises experiences and learnings from empirical research and of practitioners, and their activities at grassroots-level, to better understand the nature and root causes of VAWG. Drawing on research done in Christian and Muslim communities in various fragile settings with high religiosity, this book avoids simplistically assigning blame to any one religion, instead engaging with the commonalities of how religion and religious actors influence norms and behaviours that impact VAWG. If the sustainable development goal of ending all forms of VAWG is to be achieved, how should actors in the international development sector engage with religion and religious actors? This book unpacks the nature of religion and religious actors in relation to VAWG, with the aim of giving greater clarity on how to (and how not to) engage with this crucial issue. Combining cutting-edge research with case studies and pragmatic recommendations for academics, policymakers and practitioners, this concise and easily accessible volume helps instigate discussion and engagement with the incredibly important relationships between religion and VAWG.

Abstract

The first part of the Trilogy explicates the bedrock conviction that women, men and queer realize their physical, psychic, social and spiritual integrity with the help of speech acts. I describe speech acts as social choices of speakers and listeners who reciprocally enhance their equal dignity, freedom and rights in a discourse. I make clear that the investigation of the state of the integrity of the individual person is a matter for empirical science; I call the experience to be consciously enjoying my integrity, the mystical experience. In the second part of the Trilogy, I talk about personal mystical experiences, meditations and about basic convictions concerning my Christian faith. As validity condition of the validity of any religious claim, I discuss their correspondence with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, notably the recognition and respect of the equal dignity, freedom and rights of all women, men and queer. The third part of the Trilogy completes my systematic investigation of the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as promoted in the 16 documents of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). A Council serves the Roman Catholic Church to describe the essence and purpose of her being and I analyze this purpose and essence within the historical context of the making of the 16 texts of the Second Vatican Council. My investigation shows that throughout the documents there is an ambivalent parallelism between two contradicting descriptions of the Roman Catholic Church. The texts show that there is the social institution of the Roman Catholic Church as an absolute monarchy with an authoritarian and discriminating hierarchical structure and that there is the faith institution of the Roman Catholic Church as the People of God and the Gospel of the just world of Jesus Christ. I hold that the social institution of the Roman Catholic Church needs to change, because of the essence and purpose of a Church as a community of faithful. I present a social model for the Church that realizes the dignity of the individual faithful as the social choice of the individual woman, man and queer. Dignity includes the social choice to give away some freedom and rights to women, men and queer as possibility condition for the social realization of their dignity. Giving away something of my freedom and rights for the social realization of the dignity of others enhances the dignity of both, my dignity and the dignity of the others. This mutual enhancement of dignity constitutes not only a basic function for operating democracies but constitutes also a basic element of the just world of God.

Abstract

"Christianity harmonizes with itself, and involves in its progress the same great principles, which characterize its incipient state. The Christian, therefore, lives as he began to live. He began in faith. He lives, day by day, in the exercise of faith. And, by the grace of God, he is ultimately made victorious, and is brought into the possession of the divine image, through the same faith. I have endeavored, in the following pages, to illustrate this great truth. The present work, therefore, is, to some extent, kindred in its nature with the Interior Life. And it is proper to say here, that it has been found necessary, in order to its completeness, to transfer to it, in a few instances, the statements and principles, which are there given. I have particular reference in this remark to portions of the third and twelfth chapters in Part I, and of the ninth chapter in Part II. The leading object of both Works is the promotion of practical holiness. I have no doubt, that the object will meet with favor; but have less confidence, that the manner of executing it will be approved. But, however this may be, it is a satisfaction to know, that books, as well as other things, have their overruling Providence. And he, who writes, as well as he who acts in other ways, can exercise a cheerful confidence in leaving what he has done with God, who can distinguish between the result and the intention, and can make even the weak and imperfect things of his people to praise him"--Book.
