Jorie van der Loo beschrijft - vanuit een specifieke invalshoek - oorzaken die vaak ten grondslag liggen aan gevoelens van sympathie en antipathie. Hij maakt daarbij gebruik van een metafoor: de elementen 'Aarde', 'Water', 'Lucht' en 'Vuur'. Ze vormen een herkenbaar kader om zelfkennis te toetsen of te vergroten, en de daarop gebaseerde mensenkennis verder te ontwikkelen. De auteur geeft aan hoe de afstand tussen mensen die anders geaard zijn, of die als tegengesteld worden ervaren (we zeggen immers weieens: 'Zij zijn water en vuur'), kan worden overbrugd.
