Im vorliegenden Buch geht es nicht um Mehrsprachigkeitsforschung an sich, sondern darum, den mehr oder weniger stringenten Zusammenhang von individueller oder gesellschaftlicher Mehrsprachigkeit und Kreativität im Allgemeinen bzw. literarischer Kreativität im Besonderen zu erforschen. Der interdisziplinäre Ansatz besteht darin, diesen angenommenen Zusammenhang – die deutschsprachige Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts und des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts lassen einen solchen vermuten – aus der Perspektive der einzelnen Fächer zu untersuchen. A major historical phenomenon of our century, exile has been a focal point for reflections about individual and cultural identity and problems of nationalism, racism, and war. Whether emigrés, exiles, expatriates, refugees, or nomads, these people all experience a distance from their homes and often their native languages. Exile and Creativity brings together the widely varied perspectives of nineteen distinguished European and American scholars and cultural critics to ask: Is exile a falling away from a source of creativity associated with the wholeness of home and one’s own language, or is it a spur to creativity?In essays that range chronologically from the Renaissance to the 1990s, geographically from the Danube to the Andes, and historically from the Inquisition to the Holocaust, the complexities and tensions of exile and the diversity of its experiences are examined. Recognizing exile as an interior experience as much as a physical displacement, this collection discusses such varied topics as intellectual exile and seventeenth-century French literature; different versions of home and of the novel in the writings of Bakhtin and Lukács; the displacement of James Joyce and Clarice Lispector; a young journalist’s meeting with James Baldwin in the south of France; Jean Renoir’s Hollywood years; and reflections by the descendents of European emigrés. Strikingly, many of the essays are themselves the work of exiles, bearing out once more the power of the personal voice in scholarship.With the exception of the contribution by Henry Louis Gates Jr., these essays were originally published in a special double issue of Poetics Today in 1996. L'expérience maternelle, qui consiste à transmettre la vie, à la perpétuer en gardant l'empreinte corporelle au creux de leur ventre, plonge les femmes, les mères, dans des émotions, des sensations proches d'un archaïque, quasi innommable. En offrant leurs paroles et leurs écrits aux mères d'aujourd'hui et aux professionnels qui s'en soucient, des écrivaines tentent de restituer un vécu qui échappe mais qui est néanmoins, grâce à elles, pensable, pensé, et peut se dire, s'écrire, fût-ce partiellement. À travers leurs oeuvres, l'auteur montre comment Colette, Anaïs Nin, Marguerite Duras ont su prendre place dans la construction d'un discours maternel dès le début du XXe siècle, et comment des auteurs contemporains comme Julia Kristeva, Nancy Huston, Marie Darrieussecq et Christine Angot ont pu en créer les prolongements et les variations. Ces différentes formes d'écriture sur la maternité, sur la naissance d'un enfant, entrecroisent mort et vie, sexualité, fulgurance de l'amour, comme autant de mouvements, de déstabilisations psychiques qui sous-tendent cette expérience intérieure entre « corps et psyché ». Témoignant de la passion maternelle avec les risques qu'elle suppose, ces écrivaines ont su faire de la maternité un art, conjuguant force, dureté, mystère mais aussi créativité grâce à une écriture qui met en scène le langage, joue sur les mots, déjoue et rejoue la métaphore, au carrefour entre figure rhétorique et sensation entre amour de mères et sublimation de femmes.

George Eliot has been widely praised both for the richness of her prose and the universality of her themes. In this compelling study, Peggy Fitzhugh Johnstone goes beyond these traditional foci to examine the role of aggression in Eliot's fiction and to find its source in the author's unconscious sense of loss stemming from traumatic family separations and deaths during her childhood and adolescence. Johnstone demonstrates that Eliot's creative work was a constructive response to her sense of loss and that the repeating patterns in her novels reflect the process of release from her state of mourning for lost loved ones.
