What is the "clash of civilizations"? What are us-group constructions? What is the West? This critical discourse analysis informed by cognitive linguistics answers these questions in detail using a data set comprising more than 100,000 German-language print media articles. It presents highly relevant findings on the use of "we" and "us," as well as on the media production of large social groups and political and cultural global conflicts. Der Band präsentiert eine korpusbasierte, kognitionslinguistisch informierte, kritische Diskursanalyse zur sprachlichen Konstruktion von sozialen Großeinheiten wie Kollektiven und Eigen-Gruppen. Insbesondere die Rolle ?des Westens? im sogenannten ?Kampf der Kulturen? in deutschsprachigen Printmedien wird detailliert herausgearbeitet. Präzise analysiert wird der vielfältige Gebrauch des Personalpronomens ?Wir?. Die Datengrundlage der qualitative und quantitative Zugänge verbindenden repräsentativen Untersuchung bilden mehr als 100.000 Pressetexte deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften und Zeitungen, die in einem Zeitraum von 1993 bis 2019 erschienen sind. Mit ihrem interdisziplinären Zugriff richtet sich die Untersuchung nicht nur an ein linguistisches Fachpublikum, sondern an alle, die in sozialwissenschaftlicher und philosophischer Perspektive an dem komplexen Zusammenhang von Sprache und sozialen Konstruktionen, Diskurs und Identität, Medien und Kollektivität interessiert sind. Die Untersuchung liefert hierzu hochrelevante, korpuslinguistisch fundierte neue Forschungsergebnisse und innovative Terminologien.

First published in 1988, this book focuses on diversity and discourse, and collects contemporaneous research across a wide range of topics including: description, polemic, narrative analysis, DJ talk, philosophical history, conversation, children’s books and nuclear deterrence. The essays demonstrate analyses of discourse in the service of stylistic inquiry, exploring relationships of text and context. This reflects the overall argument that discourse analyses aiming to represent diversity of social context will necessarily approach the task selectively, since all dimensions are of potential relevance to any and every communicative manifestation. Die Diskurslinguistik als relativ neue Teildisziplin der germanistischen Linguistik beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie soziale Wirklichkeiten in transtextuell organisierten Einheiten konstruiert werden. Bisher finden dabei noch kaum Texte aus digitalen Medien (z.B. aus Twitter) Berücksichtigung. Ziel ist es, das Programm und das Methodeninventar der Diskurslinguistik in zwei Richtungen zu erweitern: Zum einen sollen die spezifischen Beschreibungskategorien und Analysewerkzeuge für Diskurse in digitalen Medien systematisiert werden. Zum anderen sollen Methoden und Instrumente der Korpuslinguistik und Digital Methods im Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Diskurslinguistik evaluiert und ausgebaut werden. Die Publikation thematisiert Spezifika digitaler Medien und Plattformen aus diskurslinguistischer Sicht und beschreibt, welche charakteristischen Muster sich aus diesen Spezifika in digitalen Diskursen ergeben. Zudem werden ethische und rechtliche Aspekte bei der Analyse digitaler Diskurse (z.B. Anonymisierung igitaler (Sprach-)Daten) thematisiert. In einem umfassenden Methodenkapitel geben die Autor/-innen zudem einen Überblick über relevante Methoden für digitale Diskursanalysen, deren Einsatz an Fallbeispielen illustriert wird.

"This book integrates insights from dialogic theory and SFL to extend our understandings of engagement in medical research articles, going beyond notions of the role of verbal dialogue to encompass mathematical and visual semiotics and consider text not just as language but as multisemiosis.
