Abstract

This book describes the most recent techniques for turbo decoder implementation, especially for 4G and beyond 4G applications.  The authors reveal techniques for the design of high-throughput decoders for future telecommunication systems, enabling designers to reduce hardware cost and shorten processing time.  Coverage includes an explanation of VLSI implementation of the turbo decoder, from basic functional units to advanced parallel architecture. Several state-of-the-art techniques that improve complexity and/or throughput are introduced.  The authors discuss both hardware architecture techniques and experimental results, showing the variations in area/throughput/performance with respect to several techniques. This book also illustrates turbo decoders for 3GPP-LTE/LTE-A and IEEE 802.16e/m standards, which provide a low-complexity but high-flexibility circuit structure to support these standards and enables designs that reconfigure block size and parallelism.  Case studies include the discussions of both throughput and performance of each mode (block size/parallelism/iteration).  This book not only highlights the critical design issues that restrict the speedup of parallel architecture, but it also provides the solutions to overcome these limitations by modifying slightly the turbo codec of modern standards.     ·         Offers readers a complete introduction to practical turbo decoder design; ·         Describes different design methodologies and explains the trade-offs between performance improvement and overhead; ·         Explains modern techniques for state-of-the-art designs; ·         Includes simulation and implementation results with respect to various decoder circuit designs; ·         Reveals novel approaches to higher operating efficiency of turbo decoders for beyond 4G applications.

Abstract

The devastating effects caused by the recent catastrophic earthquakes that took place all over the world from Japan, New Zealand, to Chile, as well as those occurring in the Mediterranean basin, have once again shown that ground motion, although a serious source of direct damage, is not the only parameter to be considered, with most damage being the result of coseismic geological effects that are directly connected to the earthquake source or caused by ground shaking. The primary environmental effects induced by earthquakes as well as the secondary effects (sensu Environmental Seismic Intensity - ESI 2007 scale) must be considered for a more correct and complete evaluation of seismic hazards, at both regional and local scales. This Special Issue aims to collect all contributions that, using different methodologies, integrate new data produced with multi-disciplinary and innovative methods. These methodologies are essential for the identification and characterization of seismically active areas, and for the development of new hazard models, obtained using different survey techniques. The topic attracted a lot of interest, 19 peer-reviewed articles were collected; moreover, different areas of the world have been analyzed through these methodologies: Italy, USA, Spain, Australia, Ecuador, Guatemala, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, China, Japan, and Nepal.

Abstract

Sven Norberg has, inter alia, served as Director of the Legal Affairs department at the EFTA Secretariat, as Judge of the EFTA Court and as Director at the DG Competition in the European Commission. He was instrumental to the successful conclusion of the EEA Agreement, being in charge of a team of lawyers servicing the different EFTA negotiating groups preparing the EEA Agreement with particular responsibility for the Negotiating Group on Legal and Institutional Questions. He also played a central role in the preparation and drafting of the new Regulation 1/2003 on the implementation of the rules on competition laid down in Articles 81 and 82 EC. He has been actively involved in the setting up and running of the Master of European Affairs Program at the Lund University, is a judge in the European Law Moot Court Competition and is co-author to several books and has written numerous articles on Community and EEA law. In this Liber Amicorum, friends and colleagues pay tribute to Sven Norberg at the occasion of his retirement from the DG Competition in December 2005. The book contains articles by a number of prominent authors, including present and formers members of the European and national judiciaries, members of the services of other EU institutions and of the EFTA Secretariat, academics from different European universities as well as practitioners from government services and from leading European law firms. The contributions focus mainly on EU competition law and on EEA Law, but also other parts of EU, international and national law are dealt with.
