Abstract

A lack of competitiveness has been identified by many as the underlying factor behind weak economic growth and high unemployment in Europe. The purpose of this report is to assess the issue of competitiveness in the EU and other advanced and emerging economies and to promote a clearer understanding of its relationship to the crisis and to long-term labour market and social outcomes.

Abstract

Jakob Schwab analyzes central mechanisms in the systematic economic interaction between rich and poor countries. He focuses on the drivers and effects of investment in developing countries and shows that predictions of standard economic analysis may turn around when accounting for peculiarities of North-South globalization. The author shows how endowments with educational skill levels may lead to complementarity between trade and capital inflows, how inflows of direct investment capital may hinder income growth in poor countries, and how the distributional effects of the presence of multinational enterprises are perceived differently in countries of different development structures. Contents Two-Way Capital Flows and Growth Specialization and Capital Flows How the Economic and Institutional Environment Shapes Individual Attitudes towards Multinational Enterprises Target Groups Researchers and students in the field of international economics Practitioners in the field of international economic architecture The Author Jakob Schwab is a postdoctoral researcher in International Economics at the German Development Institute (Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik, DIE/GDI).

Abstract

In this new book on Africa-China relations, Ngonlardje Kabra Mbaidjol strongly engages in the heated debates on African cooperation with China, an increasingly rich and powerful partner. The current dominant view highlights the neo-colonial and exploitative nature of these relations with a denial of any positive results for African people. However, the growing China-Africa partnership took its roots at Bandung 1955 conference, to culminate with an overt competition between China and other nations over African resources. For many, 'a new scramble for Africa' emerges. The author argues there is rather a 'global scramble for China,' a fierce battle to get the PRC's kind attention. Africa is right to engage the struggle to access China's development funding. Africa may wish to avoid being distracted by rival voices, but to endeavor doing its own homework and rehearse for the global competition, in the only interest of African people. Mbaidjol's book unpacks Africa's preparedness and rehearsal strategy.

Abstract

Abstract

Development organizations need to reaffirm the Canadian consensus that international co-operation works and persuade the public and politicians that sustainable development is the key to human security and international order. The way to achieve this, contributors argue, is by demonstrating effectiveness and by systematically documenting, evaluating, and disseminating development successes through reasoned policy dialogue and strategic public engagement. Strategies of Public Engagement makes a valuable contribution to the search for new ways to enhance the relevance and value of development organizations in the twenty-first century. It will be of interest to readers concerned with NGOs, Canadian development assistance, and north-south relations.

Abstract

International political economy is both a discipline and a set of global practices and conditions. This volume explores how the two are related, illustrating the changing character of the global political economy, as well as changing perspectives on that character. The authors first consider how social issues, policy concerns, and philosophical judgments help constitute IPE both as a worldview and as a discipline. A central theme here is the reciprocal creation of the discipline and the social practices said to comprise it. Subsequent chapters illustrate the incongruence between the nature of the social world as alleged in IPE's premises—which often distortedly frame issues—and the alternative characterizations available from other social groups, behaviors, and approaches. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the tensions between "conventional" and "alternative" framings of the international political economy, raising questions about the nature, consequences, and insights of diverse approaches to IPE.
