Abstract

The Universe of Quadrics This text presents the theory of quadrics in a modern form. It builds on the previously published book "The Universe of Conics", including many novel results that are not easily accessible elsewhere. As in the conics book, the approach combines synthetic and analytic methods to derive projective, affine, and metrical properties, covering both Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. While the history of conics is more than two thousand years old, the theory of quadrics began to develop approximately three hundred years ago. Quadrics play a fundamental role in numerous fields of mathematics and physics, their applications ranging from mechanical engineering, architecture, astronomy, and design to computer graphics. This text will be invaluable to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students, those in adjacent fields of study, and anyone with a deeper interest in geometry. Complemented with about three hundred fifty figures and photographs, this innovative text will enhance your understanding of projective geometry, linear algebra, mechanics, and differential geometry, with careful exposition and many illustrative exercises. The Authors Boris Odehnal, born in 1973, got his PhD and habilitation in geometry at the Vienna University of Technology. 2011–2012 professor at the Dresden University of Technology. Since 2012, he has held the position of senior lecturer in geometry at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He is the author of several dozens of publications on geometry. Abstract

This book addresses a range of aging intensity functions, which make it possible to measure and compare aging trends for lifetime random variables. Moreover, they can be used for the characterization of lifetime distributions, also with bounded support. Stochastic orders based on the aging intensities, and their connections with some other orders, are also discussed. To demonstrate the applicability of aging intensity in reliability practice, the book analyzes both real and generated data. The estimated, properly chosen, aging intensity function is mainly recommended to identify data’s lifetime distribution, and secondly, to estimate some of the parameters of the identified distribution. Both reliability researchers and practitioners will find the book a valuable guide and source of inspiration.

Abstract

In simulation tests of dynamic states of the power system (PS), the database of parameters of mathematical models of generating units is most commonly used. In many cases, the parameter values are burdened with large errors. Consequently, the results obtained are not reliable and do not allow drawing true conclusions. This monograph presents the developed methods and tools supporting the process of measurement determination of reliable values of parameters of mathematical models of synchronous generators and excitation systems. Special measurement tests are the basis for determining the parameters. The tests can be carried out in conditions of normal operation of generating units, in which electrical machines operate in the state of saturation of magnetic cores, and voltage regulators can reach limits. This book is intended for specialists in power engineering as well as students of faculties of electrical engineering interested in issues of PS transient states.

Abstract

Abstract

This book discusses enterprise hierarchies, which view a target system with varying degrees of abstraction. These requirement refinement hierarchies can be represented by goal models. It is important to verify that such hierarchies capture the same set of rationales and intentions and are in mutual agreement with the requirements of the system being designed. The book also explores how hierarchies manifest themselves in the real world by undertaking a data mining exercise and observing the interactions within an enterprise. The inherent sequence-agnostic property of goal models prevents requirement analysts from performing compliance checks in this phase as compliance rules are generally embedded with temporal information. The studies discussed here seek to extract finite state models corresponding to goal models with the help of model transformation. The i*ToNuSMV tool implements one such algorithm to perform model checking on i* models. In turn, the AFSR framework provides a new goal model nomenclature that associates semantics with individual goals. It also provides a reconciliation machinery that detects entailment or consistency conflicts within goal models and suggests corrective measures to resolve such conflicts. The authors also discuss how the goal maintenance problem can be mapped to the state-space search problem, and how A* search can be used to identify an optimal goal model configuration that is free from all conflicts. In conclusion, the authors discuss how the proposed research frameworks can be extended and applied in new research directions. The GRL2APK framework presents an initiative to develop mobile applications from goal models using reusable code component repositories.

Abstract

This monograph provides an introduction to the design and analysis of Hybrid High-Order methods for diffusive problems, along with a panel of applications to advanced models in computational mechanics. Hybrid High-Order methods are new-generation numerical methods for partial differential equations with features that set them apart from traditional ones. These include: the support of polytopal meshes, including non-star-shaped elements and hanging nodes; the possibility of having arbitrary approximation orders in any space dimension; an enhanced compliance with the physics; and a reduced computational cost thanks to compact stencil and static condensation. The first part of the monograph lays the foundations of the method, considering linear scalar second-order models, including scalar diffusion – possibly heterogeneous and anisotropic – and diffusion-advection-reaction. The second part addresses applications to more complex models from the engineering sciences: non-linear Leray-Lions problems, elasticity, and incompressible fluid flows. This book is primarily intended for graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics and numerical analysis, who will find here valuable analysis tools of general scope.
