Abstract

The 'Euthalian apparatus' is a corpus of auxiliary texts that summarize Acts and the New Testament Letters. The material is found in a great number of Greek biblical manuscripts. Some sources identify the author as 'Euthalius, bishop of Sulci', but almost nothing is known about this figure. Vemund Blomkvist's study is based on the idea that the biblical text and the apparatus form a 'system', and that this system may be studied as a unity. The commentary shows that the different genres of the apparatus offer quite different paraphrases of the apostolic writings: The argumenta present a radicalized interpretation of Paul's theology, while the chapter titles seem to be closer to the biblical text. Together with Prof. David Hellholm, Blomkvist has published a study on the meta-terminology of the apparatus ('Paraenesis as an ancient genre-designation', 2002), also included in the present volume.

Abstract

The fifteen essays in this volume, rooted in the work of the Hellenistic Moral Philosophy and Early Christianity Section of the SBL, examine the works of Philodemus and how they illuminate the cultural context of early Christianity. Born in Gadara in Syria, Philodemus (ca. 110-40 BCE) was active in Italy as an Epicurean philosopher and poet. This volume comprises three parts; the first deals with Philodemus’ works in their own terms, the second situates his thought within its larger Greco-Roman context, and the third explores the implications of his work for understanding the earliest Christians, especially Paul. It will be useful to all readers interested in Hellenistic philosophy and rhetoric as well as Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity.

Abstract

"The 'Institutiones humanarum litterarum' - that is, the second book of Cassiodorus' masterpiece, devoted to secular learning - have come to us in three different textual forms: the 'authentic' recension Omega, corresponding to Cassiodorus' final wishes, and two subsequent recensions, named Phi and Delta. Here, later interpolations were added starting from an earlier authorial draft, providing modern readers with valuable information about Cassiodorus' progressive revisions and updates. Subsequent additions are also evidence of the early fortune of the 'Institutiones', showing which texts were actively read and studied from the 6th to the 9th centuries. Following Roger Mynors' and Pierre Courcelle's fundamental intuitions, Ilaria Morresi provides the first complete critical edition of the Phi Delta corpora, based on the systematic study of the manuscript tradition. Much attention is paid to the many diagrams included both within the 'Institutiones saeculares' and the interpolations, which are clues to the great importance of images for Early Mediaeval teaching on Trivium and Quadrivium."--

Abstract

For clergy, scholar, and lay person, Paul's letters hold weight and continue to draw in new readers. In this collection of essays, Anders Runesson listens to the voice of the historical Paul – a Jew proclaiming a form of Judaism to non-Jews to save them from divine wrath – but also probes what it means to breathe new life into this historical figure in the twenty-first century.
