Since childbirth became a medicalized - and usually hospitalized - event a century ago, women's and families' psychosocial needs have been relegated to a somewhat peripheral role within the clinically focussed hierarchy of medical care. This text reinstates psychosocial issues as a primary focus of care, together with clinical excellence. Family-centred care is a familiar phrase in today's maternity services, with professional guidelines and hospital policies including the term in their care protocols; however, few definitions, and no specific standards, for family-centred care exist. While all caregivers and care services are likely to define their care as sensitive to women's needs, and family-centred, the actual implementation of a family-centred approach - despite it being a current fashion in care - is still inadequate. This book clearly defines family-centred perinatal care, and outlines how truly family-centred care can, and should, be implemented, and how, and where, this has been done.

Cet aphorisme illustre la pertinence des signes et la force visuelle des signaux qui constituent l'image tant il est vrai que sa compréhension est infiniment plus directe que le décryptage et la signification des nombreux mots la décrivant. La transmission du savoir médical et la pratique du diagnostic n'ont pas échappé à cette révolution pédagogique en profondeur : l'imagerie médicale dans le but diagnostique (scanner, IRM, échographie, reconstruction tridimensionnelle ... ) sont aujourd'hui au service des patients et partie intégrante de leurs dossiers. Quarante années de pratique clinique et chirurgicale passées auprès des enfants dans le domaine de la pathologie oro-maxillo-faciale et cervicale ont permis la constitution d'une vaste photothèque présentant des pathologies touchant l'enfant du foetus à l'adolescent. Nous pensons que la présenter, même condensée, peut être utile à l'éducation du regard. Puisse cet atlas contribuer à transmettre aux jeunes générations un savoir en pathologie oro-maxillo-faciale afin qu'elles discriminent plus aisément le normal du pathologique.

My main purpose in writing the present book was to assemble and summarize scattered physiologic observations on fetuses for my own information and for that of my students. I hope that the result will be useful to others who are working in fetal physiology and perhaps will help direct attention to problems which need to be investigated. Another purpose was to provide a supplement for courses in embryology to help stress functional aspects of development; this is in line with current trends of medical teaching. Finally, I had in mind those in allied fields, especially neurology, psychology and pediatrics, who are interested in problems of behavior and who have frequent occasion to desire knowledge of prenatal physiology.
