Abstract

Exhibition: Sint-Baafsabdij, Gent 21-3-2017 - 11-6-2017.

Abstract

Bringing many years of work together in a single place, here on the page, rather than on the walls of a museum or gallery, we can consider both senses in which Roels thinks images are worth repeating. In the obstinate and dedicated labour of printing and arranging serial, but different, versions of single images together; and then also with regard to the overall effect of bringing these iterations of themselves into the same space. But there is another sense in which we might find Roels’s work echoing not only itself, but that of those that came before him; and that, funnily enough, is in his refusal to take himself, or his work, too seriously. Just seriously enough, it seems, to invest time, effort, and skill into the production of his complex and subtly nuanced work, but never to the point, that, like Ruscha before him, (the artist who made Various Small Fires and Milk), he finds himself unable to resist, and more importantly, to play with, the constraints of his own logic. A little like Dalí too, perhaps, who, captivated as he was by the potential of photography to document and catalogue the world, was also sure that this very capacity would result in us never being able to see anything in the same way, ever again. From ‘the subtlety of aquaria’ as Dalí himself put it ’to the fastest most fleeting gestures of wild animals, the photograph affords us a thousand fragmentary images culminating in a dramatized cognitive totalization.’ That too, is something worth repeating. Abstract

After it is gone, the landscape appears — Yutaka TakanashiIn The “Landscape” Appears, an essay written in 1984, Japanese photographer Yutaka Takanashi discusses a haiku by the poet Matsuo Basho, using it as a metaphor for landscape photography. ‘What is up to the photographer to do with the “landscape”‘, Takanashi writes, ‘is to encounter it, destroy it, rebuild it, and then release it.’ Therein lies the pursuit of a new “landscape”, the landscape of the photograph, the landscape of the haiku. One that not only relates an experience, but is an experience. Like Basho’s haiku. Maybe that is what The hill that wasn’t, in the form of a book, is about. I had seen the landscape many times, but it was not until that summer morning that I encountered it. And by photographing it and turning it into this book, I destroyed it, rebuilt it and released it.

Abstract

What constitutes our perceived environment and how do we link one environment to another? For Bert Villa, every landscape is an assemblage. In our gaze, the different features we see and have seen before are intuitively tied together through memory and association. Built structures remind us of others with similar looks and functions or connected histories and thus link landscapes to one another. Fences, cooling towers, antennas or drainpipes are both constituent off their direct environments and of mental maps of assembled environments. In Assembly, Bert Villa investigates this process by creating a collection of photographs depicting various environments and describing their material constitution in detail. The publication playfully hides shots of some of his own pre-existing works between images taken during Bert Villa’s trips in the peripheries of suburbia, industry and cityscapes. Following personal logics that associate one element or spatial ordening to another, the book jumps from one perceived environment to the other. In this way, Assembly takes its reader on an associative journey through constructed landscapes, navigating the borders between artistic, functional and spontaneous constructions and everything in between.
