Die Studie analysiert das Konzept der Fürsprache als ein grundlegendes Thema und narratives Mittel in Franz Kafkas Schriften. Durch detaillierte Lektüren bestimmt die Autorin die dreipolige Kommunikationsszene des Sprechens-für-einen-anderen als einen zentralen Aspekt von Autorschaft, einen Nexus zwischen juristisch-politischen und literarisch-narrativen Repräsentationsformen und einen Modus der Rezeption von Literatur. This study analyzes the concept of "speaking-for" (advocacy) as a central topic and narrative device in Franz Kafka's writings. Through detailed readings, the author explores how scenes of triangulated communication function in connection with authorship, as a nexus between legal-political and literary-narrative forms of representation, and as a mode of literary reception.

Ludwig Wittgenstein famously declared that philosophy "ought really to be written only as a form of poetry," and he even described the Tractatus as "philosophical and, at the same time, literary." But few books have really followed up on these claims, and fewer still have focused on their relation to the special literary and artistic period in which Wittgenstein worked. This book offers the first collection to address the rich, vexed, and often contradictory relationship between modernism-the twentieth century's predominant cultural and artistic movement-and Wittgenstein, one of its preeminent and most enduring philosophers. In doing so it offers rich new understandings of both. Michael LeMahieu Karen Zumhagen-Yekplé bring together scholars in both twentieth-century philosophy and modern literary studies to put Wittgenstein into dialogue with some of modernism's most iconic figures, including Samuel Beckett, Saul Bellow, Walter Benjamin, Henry James, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Adolf Loos, Robert Musil, Wallace Stevens, and Virginia Woolf. The contributors touch on two important aspects of Wittgenstein's work and modernism itself: form and medium. They discuss issues ranging from Wittgenstein and poetics to his use of numbered propositions in the Tractatus as a virtuoso performance of modernist form; from Wittgenstein's persistence metaphoric use of religion, music, and photography to an exploration of how he and Henry James both negotiated the relationship between the aesthetic and the ethical. Covering many other fascinating intersections of the philosopher and the arts, this book offers an important bridge across the disciplinary divides that have kept us from a fuller picture of both Wittgenstein and the larger intellectual and cultural movement of which he was a part.

Nackt, frei, gesund: Die Lebensreformbewegung polarisierte um 1900 weite Teile der Bevölkerung. Doch wie verhielt sich die deutschsprachige Literatur zum lebensreformerischen Diskurs und zu der in ihm angelegten Vorstellung eines neuen Menschen? Die Beiträger_innen diskutieren die theoretisch-inhaltliche Verarbeitung von Ernährungsreform, Naturheilkunde, Freikörperkultur etc. durch die Autor_innen der Jahrhundertwende. Dabei werden nicht nur bekannte Namen (Rilke, Kafka und Hesse), sondern auch weitgehend unerforschte Schriftsteller wie Heinrich Pudor, Wilhelm Speyer und Wilhelm Schwaner untersucht. Neil Cornwell's study, while endeavouring to present an historical survey of absurdist literature and its forbears, does not aspire to being an exhaustive history of absurdism. Long description: Der vorliegende Band versammelt die Ergebnisse von Forschungsarbeiten, die während der Laufzeit des Netzwerks ‚Postkoloniale Studien in der Germanistik‘ entstanden sind. Der erste Teil „Bestandsaufnahmen und theoretische Perspektiven“ stellt die Entwicklung und aktuelle Fragen des Forschungsfelds vor. Der zweite Teil „Lektüren“ umfasst Beiträge, die sich kritisch mit bestehenden postkolonialen Analysen auseinandersetzen, kanonische fiktionale Texte und Reiseberichte aus der Zeit des Kolonialismus gegen den Strich lesen und neue Texte der Gegenwartsliteratur und aktuelle Filme aufgreifen, in denen die Kolonialzeit wie auch neokoloniale Machtverhältnisse kritisch verarbeitet werden. Untersucht werden neuartige Gegenstandsfelder wie der binneneuropäische Kolonialismus, deutsch-afrikanische Diaspora-Literatur, postkolonialer Ecocriticism sowie die anhaltende Faszination für Kolonialphantasien in der Gegenwartskultur. Die methodische Bandbreite erstreckt sich von kontrapunktischen Verfahren über Hermeneutik und Diskurskritik bis zu Dekonstruktion und New Historicism. Der Band soll die theoretische und historische Auseinandersetzung mit der postkolonialen Germanistik und Komparatistik in Forschung und Lehre fördern.
