The intellectual background and cultural legacy of Patrick GeddesExplores Patrick Geddes’s Scottish intellectual background in depth for the first time, drawing on George Davie’s notion of the democratic intellectHighlights his insistence on the interdisciplinary importance of arts and sciences Considers his achievements from his pioneering work in Edinburgh and Dundee and his leadership of the Celtic revival, to his influence in Paris, London and IndiaPatrick Geddes is one of Scotland’s most remarkable thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century. His environmental and cultural message endures today, but until now the Scottish context to his thinking has not been properly acknowledged. This book changes that, situating Geddes within a distinctly Scottish intellectual background, and exploring his substantial national and international advocacy of art, architecture, ecology, literature, planning, geography and Celtic studies.

Envisioning Sociology is a landmark work, the first major study of the founding of sociology in Britain and the enormous contributions made by the intellectual circle led by Victor Branford and Patrick Geddes. Authors John Scott and Ray Bromley chronicle the biographical connections and personal partnerships of the circle's key participants, their international connections, their organization-building work, and the business activities that underpinned their efforts. Branford and Geddes fashioned an ambitious and wide-ranging interdisciplinary vision, drawing on geography, anthropology, economics, and urban planning, in addition to sociology. This vision was an integral part of a project of social reconstruction, a "third way" eschewing both liberalism and communism in favor of cooperation, redistribution, and federalism. Envisioning Sociology uncovers a previously hidden history of the social sciences, giving readers a fascinating glimpse into early twentieth-century social science and political economy, while demonstrating the contemporary relevance of the ideas of these underrated figures. Although Branford and Geddes failed to establish the grand sociology they envisioned, their ideas helped develop the theory and practice of community development, participatory democracy, bioregionalism, historic preservation, and neighborhood upgrading.

This anthology includes contributions from many of the key practitioners of the Arts and Crafts Movement (including C.R. Ashbee, W.R. Lethaby and Ernest Gimson), as well as from commentators in newspapers and journals. It provides both an introduction to the ideas behind the Arts and Crafts Movement in England in its own words, and a vivid picture of the people and events which shaped the Movement.(bron: achterplat boek)
