Grief binds the worshipers together in an adagio of sorrow as they encounter the sculptural representation of the Entombment of Christ. Located in funerary chapels, parish churches, cemeteries, and hospitals, these works embody the piety of the later Middle Ages. In this book, Donna Sadler examines the sculptural Entombments from Burgundy and Champagne through a variety of lenses, including performance theory, embodied perception, and the invocation of the absent presence of the Holy Sepulcher. The author demonstrates how the action of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus entombing Christ in the presence of the Marys and John operates in a commemorative and collective fashion: the worshiper enters the realm of the holy and becomes a participant in the biblical event.

Die Anregung zu diesem Buch verdankt sich einem erstaunlichen Textbefund: Wer die klassischen Texte des Mönch- und Eremitentums sowie der Bettelorden oder spätantike und mittelalterliche Heiligenlegenden aufmerksam liest, stößt immer wieder auf latrones - auf outlaws, die mit Eremiten, Mönchen und Brüdern sowie mit der Gesellschaft insgesamt interagieren und sie provozieren. Die Tatsache, dass dieses latro-Motiv schon im Alten Testaments begegnet und Jesus auf Golgotha zwischen zwei latrones hingerichtet wird, macht es mehr als unwahrscheinlich, dass es sich bei diesem Motiv lediglich um ein rhetorisches Zubehör theologischer Texte handelt: Das Motiv entpuppt sich bei genauem Hinsehen als eine theologische Schnittstelle, auf der die Freiheitsbegabung des Menschen narrativ entfaltet wird. Der spiritualitätsgeschichtliche Rundgang der Habilitationsschrift untersucht latrologische Themen des Alten und Neuen Testaments, der anachoretischen Bewegung des Ostens und des frühen Mittelalters; er widmet sich dem Reformmönchtum sowie der mendikantischen Lebensform; er berücksichtigt die mittelalterliche Ikonographie; er nimmt latrologische Orte wie Gefängnisse, Leprosorien, Friedhöfe und Eremitenzellen in Augenschein. Als Ertrag der Arbeit darf man festhalten: Die latro-Eremiten-Texte sind ein Spiegel der Ambivalenz menschlicher Freiheit - in ihrer destruktiven Gefährdung (latro-Existenz) und in ihrem eschatologisch begründeten Gelingen.

Sia gli studi sugli antichi volgari settentrionali sia quelli sui volgarizzamenti medievali della Bibbia rappresentano ambiti di vivace ricerca negli ultimi decenni. Il libro si propone come contributo a entrambi i campi. Per il primo versante, si offre un'edizione della Passione armonizzata in prosa tramandata dal manoscritto quattrocentesco Trivulziano 1993; il lavoro è corredato da un’analisi della lingua del testo, identificata come antico milanese e descritta partitamente nei suoi aspetti fonetici, morfologici, sintattici e lessicali. Per il secondo ambito di ricerca, si inquadra il testo del Trivulziano 1993 all'interno di un gruppo di volgarizzamenti in prosa di Passioni armonizzate, per lo più collocabili nell'Italia settentrionale, che erano finora sconosciuti o poco noti, evidenziandone i nessi e inserendoli nella tradizione del Diatessaron. Il lavoro è indirizzato dunque a cultori di linguistica e filologia italiana e romanza così come a chi si occupa di letteratura religiosa medievale e studi biblici. This book provides an edition and a linguistic analysis of a Passion of the Christ written in old Milanese prose and preserved in a 15th-century manuscript. The study discusses the dating of this text, the geographical context, and its dependence on a Latin model. It also analyzes its relationship with other known prose Passions and identifies their sources. A concluding word glossary highlights the most interesting and obscure words and terms.
