Artists and designers are now defined not by their discipline but by the fluidity with which their practices move between the fields of architecture, art, and design. This volume delves into four pioneering transdisciplinary studios-Jorge Pardo Sculpture, Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design, Studio Olafur Eliasson, and Åbäke-by observing and interviewing the practitioners and their assistants. A further series of interviews with curators, critics, anthropologists, designers, and artists serves to contextualize the transdisciplinary model now at the fore of creative practice. Including interviews with Jorge Pardo, Konstantin Grcic, Olafur Eliasson, and Åbäke; and Vito Acconci, Gui Bonsiepe, James Clifford, Dexter Sinister, Martino Gamper, Ryan Gander, Caroline Jones, Ronald Jones, Maria Lind, Alessandro Mendini, Rick Poynor, and Andrea Zittel.

In devising a concept for the Abbildungen exhibition, Konstantin Grcic thought back to one of his earliest designs, an additional pedestal for a sculpture by Constantin Brancusi. This became the leitmotif of his staging of twenty-one selected objects. The exhibition is the underpinning for the conception of this publication, which turns its gaze on the media-framing of Grcic's design objects. First researched in early magazines, company prospectuses, flyers and other print media, the selected pieces are presented here as reproductions of reproductions. The publication is accompanied by an in-depth analysis by Robin Schuldenfrei, Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, who, in presenting Konstantin Grcic's oeuvre to the German-speaking world, examines it from a historical perspective for the first time. Finally, the staged gallery spaces at Kunsthalle Bielefeld are documented in photographs by Wolfgang Gunzel, Offenbach. Exhibition: Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germany (19.03.-03.07.2016).

Konstantin Grcic is one of the leading designers of our time. Many of his creations, such as "Chair-One" (2004) or the "Mayday lamp" (1999), are already recognized as design classics. The book "Konstantin Grcic - Panorama" is being published in conjunction with the largest solo exhibition on Grcic to date. It contains the first catalogue raisonné of the designer's work and documents over 400 pieces of furniture, products and exhibitions with informative details, images and comprehensive descriptions. This overview is accompanied by numerous illustrated essays from renowned authors, including Peter Sloterdijk, Richard Sennett, Paola Antonelli, Jonathan Olivares, Mario Carpo, Louise Schouwenberg, Jan Boelen, Janna Lipsky and Mateo Kries. While some essays investigate Grcics oeuvre and its context, others address overarching issues that shape Grcics work, such as new production technologies, evolution of the home environment or the development of public spaces. The book is further augmented by a series of images depicting visionary spatial designs by Grcic produced especially for the exhibition, demonstrating his conceptions of life in the future. All these facets combine to make the book a unique panorama of a designer whose contemporary influence is widely felt - as well as a fascinating read for all those with an interest in the future of design.
