The new paradigm in architecture tells the story of a movement that has changed the face of architecture over the last forty years. The book begins by surveying the counter culture of the 1960s, when Jane Jacobs and Robert Venturi called for a more complex urbanism and architecture. It concludes by showing how such demands began to be realized by the 1990s in a new architecture that is aided by computer design. Promoted by such architects as Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, and Peter Eisenman, it has also been adopted by many schools and offices around the world. Charles Jencks traces the history of computer design which is built on the desire for an architecture that communicates with its users, one based on the heterogeneity of cities and global culture. This book, the first to explore the broad issue of Postmodernism, has fostered its growth in other fields such as philosophy and the arts. First written at the start of an architectural movement in the mid-1970s, it has been completely rewritten and with two new chapters, brings the history up to date.

In 'Expeditie land art' gaat Sandra Smallenburg op zoek naar deze monumentale, maar toch vaak moeilijk te vinden landschapskunstwerken. Ze reist door desolate gebieden van Amerika en ontdekt er werken die ieders voorstellingsvermogen te boven gaan: sculpturen zo groot als het Empire State Building en zo uitgestrekt als een middelgrote stad. Ze vindt er kunstwerken in zoutmeren, op hoogvlaktes en in het binnenste van een eeuwenoude vulkaan. Ook dichter bij huis blijkt er belangwekkende land art te vinden. Onder meer in de Flevopolder, op de Drentse veengronden en in de Haagse duinen bevinden zich topwerken van bekende hedendaagse kunstenaars als Richard Serra, Robert Smithson en James Turrell. Land art is kunst waarvoor je zelf op pad moet. L'architecture moderne est un sujet qui suscite la fureur, la malice, ou l'esprit mais toujours le désaccord. C'était vrai lorsque le révolutionnaire Bauhaus" a suscité une violente tempête de controverses dans l'Allemagne d'Hitler, et c'est vrai aujourd'hui, quand les profanes ou les architectes professionnels discutent des bâtiments tels que le complexe du Lincoln Center à New York. Cette étude illustrée de plus de cinquante ans d'architecture montre à quel point ce sujet est controversé.
