Un Jésus postmoderne' offers a thorough discussion of some forty contemporary French novels depicting the life of Jesus within the framework of today?s debate on fundamentalism and secularism. Focusing on the interplay of narrative viewpoints and (anti)theological perspectives, this study scrutinizes the postmodern representation of Jesus for readers who belong to a time marked by incredulity towards meta-narratives. Drawing on Marcel Gauchet and Julia Kristeva, as well as René Girard?s 'scapegoat theory', among many others, this study examines Jesus as a ?problematic hero? and a 'conceptual character' on the threshold of the new millennium. It shows how these novels reflect recent advances in biblical exegesis, religious anthropology, psychoanalysis and theology.

How can Jesus said to be ""missing""? References to Jesus are not missing, but rather a dimension of his identity. This text demonstrates that in order for us to understand Jesus and his influence, we need to see him within the context of the Judaism that was his own natural environment.

Jesus of Nazareth and the four New Testament gospels continue to fascinate people from many cultural and religious backgrounds. Who was Jesus? Are Christian claims about him supported by solid historical evidence? How reliable are the evangelists' portraits of Jesus which were written some fifty years after his crucifixion? These questions can be explored only on the basis of a sound grasp of the intentions and methods of the four evangelists. Professor Stanton insists that theevangelists are concerned with both the story and the significance of Jesus of Nazareth. Part I of this book examines the distinctive emphases of all four evangelists and discusses the apocryphal gospels, with special reference to the Gospel of Thomas. Part II deals with the ways ofassessing the evidence for Jesus and explores his teaching, intentions, and the reasons for his downfall. This book pays particular attention to appropriate methods for careful study of the gospels and the historical Jesus to provide an excellent textbook and a penetrating study for the general reader.NEW TO THIS EDITION:- Every chapter updated to take account of recent scholarly developments- Fuller discussion of literary criticism (chapter 2); the Gospel of Thomas (chapter 7); archaeological evidence (chapter 8); and methods for reconstructing the teaching of Jesus (chapter 9)- Bibliography is extended, updated, and partly annotated- New cross-references added to increase usability- Map now included- Material within some chapters and sub-sections has been reorganised to increase accessibility- Biblical quotations are now taken from the NRSV text- New larger format and text design

This study shows that Mark, Matthew and Luke present the worldwide expansion of the Christian message as a necessary consequence of Jesus' activity in Israel. The relationship between Jesus and the non-Jewish nations is examined here by a synchronic analysis of the relevant texts of the Synoptic Gospels, as well as of their compositional inner-relationships and theological classification. Departing from the same approaches for the most part, the Synoptics diverge primarily in the question of what relationship to each other Israel and the nations are placed through God's act of redemption in Jesus Christ.
