Abstract

This book provides an account of current work on letters to the editor from a range of different national, cultural, conceptual and methodological perspectives. Letters to the editor provide a window on the reflexive relationship between editorial and readership identities in historical and international contexts. They are a forum through which the personal and the political intersect, a space wherein the implications of contemporaneous events are worked out by citizens and public figures alike, and in which the meaning and significance of unfolding media narratives and events are interpreted and contested. They can also be used to understand the multiple and overlapping ways that particular issues recur over sometimes widely distinct periods. This collection brings together scholars who have helped open up letters to the editor as a resource for scholarship and whose work in this book continues to provide new insights into the relationship between journalism and its publics.

Abstract

Whether he was taking us along for a journey down the Mississippi with a couple of runaways or delivering speeches on the importance of careful lying, Mark Twain had an innate ability to captivate readers and listeners alike with his trademark humor and sarcasm. Twain never lacked for material, either, as his strong opinions regarding most issues gave him countless opportunities to articulate his thoughts in the voice that only he could provide. A frequent outlet for Twain's wit was in letters to the editors of various newspapers and periodicals. Sharing his thoughts and opinions on topical issues ranging from national affairs to local social events, with swipes along the way at woman suffrage, potholes, literary piracy and other scams, slow mail delivery, police corruption, capital punishment, and the removal of Huck Finn from libraries, Twain never hesitated to speak his mind. And now thanks to Gary Scharnhorst, more than a hundred of these letters are available in one place for us to enjoy. From his opinions on the execution of an intellectually brilliant murderer, to his scathing review of a bureau he perceived as "a pack of idiots" running on a currency of doughnuts, Twain's pure, unbridled voice is evident throughout his letters. Mark Twain on Potholes and Politics gives readers a chance to delve further than ever before into the musings of the most recognizable voice in American literature.

Abstract

The conception and creation of the children's magazine "Pioniere" was an integral part of the extensive educational plan implemented by the PCI in the fifties for the construction of a new society. This book studies the issue of the dialogue set up with the young readers which evolved through a series of innovative initiatives, but was nourished above all by the post column run by the editor Dina Rinaldi. This was pivotal in the "education of feelings" and destined, in the optic of the "Pioniere", to the training up of the new generations.

Abstract

Public attention was first caught by a court report of a failed attempt to entrap a Belgian girl into prostitution. This induced blistering editorial comment and angry letters to the paper deploring ineffectual controls over the "Great Social Evil." The next development was unusual for the Victorian press: readers began to write extensive and richly varied comment on the root of the problem - young people did not have in possession or expectation enough money or the right qualifications for marriage. The Telegraph initiated a new form of popular journalism by filling its correspondence columns for almost a month with readers letters under the heading "Marriage or Celibacy?", which they supplemented with lengthy leading articles. John Robson places in contemporary context the central issues facing Victorian youth: What is a proper marriage? How to balance income and expenditure? What are the ideal qualities of young women and men? "Emigration or starvation?" In examining these debates, he looks closely into methods of argument, connecting rhetorical techniques with public persuasion. The letters being a special kind of discourse, he shows how in the debates rhetorical and logical arguments are specifically designed to persuade the Telegraph's readers. Marriage or Celibacy? contributes to our knowledge of Victorian manners and mores, particularly among the lower middle class, and is a telling episode in the history of popular journalism. In July 1868 the Daily Telegraph congratulated itself on providing the arena for a controversy marked by "good sense, liveliness, practical wisdom, and hearty humanity." The controversy was over the choice - "Marriage or Celibacy?"--Faced by middle-class youth trying to reconcile economic facts with moral values, social customs - and love. The arena was the correspondence page of a newspaper just establishing itself as the most successful London daily through its appeal to the middle-class reader.

Abstract

"In the letters to the editor published in French newspapers from 1770 to 1791, thousands of writers received and responded to prevailing ideas of their day. This book situates overlooked voices at the center of the Enlightenment, shedding light on the social and material contexts in which knowledge was produced"--
