Certains le comparaient à un Bacchus antique ; d'autres à quelque empereur romain ; d'autres à Apollon lui-même - et le fait est qu'il rayonnait. » Dans son portrait souvenir d'Oscar Wilde, André Gide ranime la figure et l'être de l'écrivain-esthète qui fascina le monde avant d'en être déchu, après son procès pour « immoralité », et ses deux ans de travaux forcés dans la geôle de Reading. Mais l'auteur de l'immortel Portrait de Dorian Gray revit aussi par Gide dans son récit Si le grain ne meurt et dans son Journal en nous donnant à voir un autre Wilde entre légende et réalité. L'auteur : André Gide (1869-1951). Depuis Paludes, en 1897, jusqu'à son monumental Journal, en 1939, en passant par Les Faux monnayeurs, L'Immoraliste, ou Corydon, l'écrivain scandaleux et scrutateur qui marqua la vie littéraire française pendant plus d'un demi-siècle reste toujours un « contemporain capital ».
