Adam Gregerman untersucht Erklärungen für die Zerstörung von Jerusalem und seines Tempels durch die Römer in den Werken von Justinus, Origenes und Eusebius sowie im Midrasch der Klagelieder, alle etwa zeitgleich verfasste Texte aus Israel. Er zeigt, wie die Autoren die Geschehnisse apologetisch interpretieren, um (im Fall der Christen) zu beweisen oder (im Fall der Juden) den Gegenbeweis unmöglich zu machen, dass ihre Gemeinde – und nicht die andere Gemeinde – das Volk Gottes ist.

Johannes Chrysostomos ist über Jahrhunderte und bis heute in erstaunlicher Weise "Projektionsfläche" unterschiedlicher christlicher Identitätskonstruktionen. Seine Lebensgeschichte und vor allem seine Wirkungsgeschichte sind von größerer Bedeutung als seine Theologie. Der Band fragt deshalb nach den prägenden Bildern, die von dieser Persönlichkeit im Umlauf waren und sind, und nach ihrer Funktion in verschiedenen kulturellen und theologischen Diskursen. Der Band geht auf eine Basler Tagung im Januar 2007 zurück. Die Autoren kommen aus unterschiedlichen nationalen, konfessionellen und wissen­schaftlichen Traditionen.
