For Meister Eckhart, the human being as created in the image of God is a thinking being; for him, thought is of epistemological and ontological relevance. This study deals with central aspects of Eckhart's thought, such as his theory of intellect, the theoontological judgement of the ego, poverty, love, time, nothingness, happiness and peace.

Western biblical studies have tended to follow either faith-based theological approaches or value-free historical-critical methods. This monograph challenges the two extremes by pursuing the middle path of philosophical hermeneutics. While drawing on Eastern and Western philosophical writings from ancient to modern times, the author proposes original interpretive solutions to a wide range of important biblical texts, including the Akedah, Second Isaiah, the Decalogue, Qohelet, Job, and Jeremiah. Yet, this is not a collection of antiquarian studies. Readers will also gain fresh and stimulating perspectives concerning monotheism, religious faith and identity, suffering and salvation, and modern and postmodern ethics. Finally, in a supplementary essay, the author introduces readers to the history of Old Testament studies in Japan, and he outlines prospects for the future.

Issues of public concern often have an important philosophical dimension. Philosophy and Public Affairs is founded in the belief that a philosophical examination of these issues can contribute to their clarification and to their resolution. It welcomes philosophical discussions of substantive legal, social, and political problems, as well as discussions of the more abstract questions to which they give rise. It also intends to publish studies of the moral and intellectual history of such problems. Philosophy and Public Affairs fills the need for a journal in which philosophers with different viewpoints and philosophically inclined writers from various disciplines--including law, political science, economics, and sociology--can bring their distinctive methods to bear on problems that concern everyone.

This book is the first study of the ontological system of Alexander of Aphrodisias (floruit c. 200 AD), famous for his commentaries on the works of Aristotle. By drawing not only on the entire known corpus of the commentator's works, but also on numerous new Greek and Arabic sources, Marwan Rashed aimsat defining Alexander's place in the history of metaphysics. Alexander's attempt to substantiate the objectivity of the Aristotelian form draws down the curtain on the phase of the Hellenistic peripatos, at the same time marking the beginning of medieval Aristotelianism.
