Abstract

"This book describes psychology in actual operation, otherwise known as applied psychology. The author takes the reader to some of the affairs that concern him most in his daily life, to the domain of political and social affairs, to the hospital, to the schoolroom, and to the criminal court, to industry and to commerce, and to buying and selling. In fact, the author goes wherever experimental psychology is inclined, for it is the laboratory that has led most direction to the arts of practical control. The book is formally divided into eight parts; but, as a matter of fact, there are only three major sections. The first section (Part One) looks at the student himself in his daily living. The second section (Parts Two to Seven) considers the several more formal branches of applied psychology. The third section (Part Eight) will serve both as a summary of the whole book and as a repository for certain types of information which are the common property of all of the branches of applied psychology. We shall describe, for example, the general problems of experimental psychology, the problems of original nature and training, the principles of learning, and some of the larger aspects of human fellowship"--Preface. Abstract

"Topics covered by this book include: the advantages of being human; how society shapes human beings; how human beings shape society; and you. Few books have been published which survey the entire field of psychology in language which most people can understand. This book has been written to fill the need described. Though it cannot cover all the information gathered, it presents some of the basic discoveries made by psychologists and social scientists about human behavior and the forces which influence our actions. It also attempts to apply this information to the major personal and social problems of our daily living." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

"Clinical Psychology, as a body of organized knowledge and as a systematic technique of adjusting individuals to themselves and their environment, is a recent and growing branch of applied science. This volume is written for those who, at least, have had introductory courses in general, theoretical and experimental psychology. We. have had in mind the needs of psychology students, medical students and nurses. Teachers may find in it some help in comprehending and averting problems of individual maladjusted students; cases in which a consultant is not available or needed. By particularization of its broader principles, they may discover, more quickly, the role of the pupil's personality and their own in the very human processes of learning and teaching"--Preface. Abstract

"For years experimental psychologists have worked diligently in academic laboratories studying man's capacities to perceive, to work, and to learn. Only very slowly, however, have the facts and methods which they have assembled been put to use in everyday life. A particularly glaring gap in modern technology, both industrial and military, is the lack of human engineering--engineering of machines for human use and engineering of human tasks for operating machines. Today, there are many groups busy with research on man-machine problems. They use different names to describe the work in its various aspects: biotechnology, biomechanics, psychoacoustics, human engineering, applied psychophysics, engineering psychology, and systems research. In casting about for a title for this book, we tried to select one that would describe the subject matter without the restrictive connotations attaching to some of the names mentioned above. Applied Experimental Psychology seemed best to fill these requirements, because the traditional data and subject matter of experimental psychology are fundamental to this field. Throughout the book, we have also used the terms engineering psychology and human engineering in talking about this subject matter. But whatever the name, the objective is the same--to develop, through fundamental research and applied tests, a science that can deal adequately with the design and operation of machines for human use"--Preface. Abstract

"The purpose of this book is to teach the average person how to use his emotions in such a way as to give him a happier life. The method through which this is achieved is one that I have been developing in the past twenty years in response to requests from individuals living at a distance, who complained that they considered their personalities under-developed and would like to learn how to live a richer emotional life. The method has been devised for normal people. It has limited usefulness for individuals who are mentally ill, for whom nothing can replace psychiatric care"--Foreword. Abstract

"Numerous books have been written on the particular branches of psychology which relate to business. There are many good books on the subject of advertising, and the field of salesmanship has inspired almost an equal number of volumes. So far as we know, however, there has been, up to this time, no book which combines the study of all the branches of business psychology written for the business man and the student of business. This volume is designed to fill such a need. Discussion of the generalities and technicalities of psychology has intentionally been omitted from this work; it is an application of principles rather than a discussion of them. The author's intent is to examine business practices in the light of established scientific theories, with the purpose in view of enabling the reader to understand business relations more fully and to carry out his part in them more effectively. The investigation begins with the consumer, studying him for what he is--a normal human being with needs, wants, and desires to be satisfied. The goal is to learn how he may be approached to get him to buy merchandise and how he may protect himself against reactions of his own which would be harmful to him. The book then turns toward the study of what merchandise appeals to the consumer and how it can be gotten to him at the time and place at which he will buy it. This is taken up under the headings of marketing and salesmanship. The author also observes the bases on which stores and selling organizations operate. Since these latter involve hiring people to assist in the work of selling and operating stores and offices, a brief survey of employment is also included." Abstract

With the growing realization that contemporary society's problems are human, not technological, a troubled society turns to psychology for help. In response, numerous psychologists are bringing their talents to bear on socially relevant problems. This emerging social relevance is reflected in the problem-oriented theme chosen for the 1969 American Psychological Association Convention from which this volume takes its title. The volume brings together some of the many 1969 convention presentations bearing on society's problems. The contributions are diverse, ranging from descriptions and evaluations of concrete action programs, exemplifying what actually can be accomplished, to theoretical essays providing a more general framework for action.
