Abstract

"The present volume of Studies deals with some of the most essential problems of sexual psychology. The Analysis of the Sexual Impulse is fundamental. Unless we comprehend the exact process which is being worked out beneath the shifting and multifold phenomena presented to us we can never hope to grasp in their true relations any of the normal or abnormal manifestations of this instinct. I do not claim that the conception of the process here stated is novel or original. Indeed, even since I began to work it out some years ago, various investigators in these fields, especially in Germany, have deprived it of any novelty it might otherwise have possessed, while at the same time aiding me in reaching a more precise statement. This is to me a cause of satisfaction. On so fundamental a matter I should have been sorry to find myself tending to a peculiar and individual standpoint. It is a source of gratification to me that the positions I have reached are those toward which current intelligent and scientific opinions are tending. Any originality in my study of this problem can only lie in the bringing together of elements from somewhat diverse fields. I shall be content if it is found that I have attained a fairly balanced, general, and judicial statement of these main factors in the sexual instinct. In the study of Love and Pain I have discussed the sources of those aberrations which are commonly called, not altogether happily, "sadism" and "masochism." Here we are brought before the most extreme and perhaps the most widely known group of sexual perversions. I have considered them from the medico-legal standpoint, because that has already been done by other writers whose works are accessible. In the third study, on The Sexual Impulse in Women, we approach a practical question of applied sexual psychology, and a question of the first importance. No doubt the sex impulse in men is of great moment from the social point of view. It is, however, fairly obvious and well understood. The impulse in women is not only of at least equal moment, but it is far more obscure. The natural difficulties of the subject have been increased by the assumption of most writers who have touched it--casually and hurriedly, for the most part--that the only differences to be sought in the sexual impulse in man and in woman are quantitative differences. I have pointed out that we may more profitably seek for qualitative differences, and have endeavored to indicate such of these differences as seem to be of significance"--

Abstract

"During the past generation extraordinary interest has centered around relations between the sexes. Students have tackled the problem from a great many angles, which has resulted in a bewildering array of fact and fancy. Even if we confine ourselves to facts--facts gathered by the strict application of scientific method--we shall still be faced with a vast, unorganized literature. The biologist, experimenting with animals in laboratory and field, is primarily concerned with problems of internal mechanics. The social scientist, on the contrary, sees sex so largely as a cultural product that he often seems to neglect the physiological basis. The psychologist, whose task it is to explain the behavior of individuals throughout the evolutionary scale, must hold the balance between biological and social scientist. Working in this longitudinal dimension, he is impressed by the trend toward increasing control of individual by group with a corresponding decline in the relative influence of internal directives. At the human level, sex takes on a variety of meanings. Different values are given reproductive activities in different groups, and the social roles assigned men and women depend on the structure of the culture as a whole. The present volume represents a phylogenetic approach to problems of sex in the life of the group. Since material that does not measure up to the criteria of scientific method has been for the most part excluded, the reader will look in vain for many familiar landmarks. In treating the sexual behavior of lower animals the author has confined herself to carefully controlled observations and for this reason has had to leave out much interesting natural history. Owing to the paucity of scientific material, she has had to be content with rodents to represent lower mammals and primates to represent those higher on the scale. At the human level psychoanalytic and other theories are discussed only insofar as they have led directly to scientific studies of sexual behavior. Practical information concerning erotic techniques is also omitted except where it has been the subject of scientific investigation. By the same token, the more medical aspects of sexual pathology and crime have been excluded, although certain clinical case histories have been brought in from time to time to throw light on the relative importance of physiological and social influences. The scientific facts concerning sex in the social order having been presented, there remains the question of their implication for human happiness. We are in the process of building a new world, and we cannot escape the challenge of showing how factors related to sex may be mobilized in that reconstruction. In the light of the literature on sex differences, there has been suggested a reformulation of sex roles which should improve the relationship between men and women and their social usefulness as individuals. It is hoped that this may be a minor contribution to the tremendous task of postwar planning"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved).

Abstract

Harassment is a category that has been gaining ground in contemporary normative debate, appearing in political-governmental agendas, in the repertoire of social activism and in academic-scientific production. Both the movement and the feminist-inspired argumentation have constituted one of the great drivers of its public projection, helping to frame harassment in a cosmovision and in an economy of meaning with special regulatory implications in the labor and criminal spheres. In this book, the author views harassment as a device for observing the limits, potentialities and epistemological contradictions that cross the field, seeking to expose the consensus and cultural conflicts that the legal function (labor and criminal), the presumption about the subject (male or female) and the status of sexuality pose to feminist theories and social studies of law. It also seeks to demonstrate to what extent and in what terms the increasing legal density of harassment, driven or supported by different critical and feminist sources, instead of witnessing a progressive, cumulative and expansive logic of anti-patriarchal aspiration, puts the vices in evidence above all. and the political-epistemological paradoxes that permeate the way in which the field of sexuality is thought, prescribed and protected, forcing a critical return to the subject, structure and law as unfinished objects and constituents of social life.

Abstract

"Many of the hundreds of thousands of Syrians who immigrated to the US beginning in the 1870s worked as peddlers. Men were able to transgress Syrian norms related to marriage practices while they were traveling, while Syrian women accessed more economic autonomy though their participation in peddling networks. In Possible Histories, Charlotte Karem Albrecht explores this peddling economy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a site for revealing how dominant ideas about sexuality are imbricated in Arab American racial histories. Karem Albrecht marshals a queer affective approach to community and family history to show how Syrian immigrant peddlers and their interdependent networks of labor and care appeared in interconnected discourses of modernity, sexuality, gender, class, and race. Possible Histories conceptualizes this profession, and its place in narratives of Arab American history, as a "queer ecology" of laboring practices, intimacies, and knowledge production. This book ultimately proposes a new understanding of the long arm of Arab American history that puts sexuality and gender at the heart of ways of navigating US racial systems".

Abstract

This collection of essays, Protecting the human rights of sexual minorities in contemporary Africa, contains papers that were first presented at a colloquium on sexual minority rights in Africa, which took place at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, in December 2014. This event was made possible with the generous support of the Government of the Kingdom of Norway, through its Embassy in South Africa. These papers were subsequently peer-reviewed and reworked. Viewing homosexuality through a legal and rights-based prism, this volume brings together fourteen essays focusing on various aspects of homosexuality, covering a wide rage of countries from across the continent. The situation in nine countries (Botswana, Cameroon, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe) is reviewed; while other contributions are more regional in their perspective. This makes this publication one of the most comprehensive collections of African voices on this topic. For too long African voices have been silent on the fledgling discourse on sexual minorities. This volume seeks to amend this shortcoming. The editors and authors and contributors are not only African, but also, with a few exceptions, graduates of the Centre’s Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. The publisher is an African-based publisher, the Pretoria University Law Press (PULP), based at the Centre for Human Rights.
