Das weit über die Grenzen der Theologie hinaus bekannte Hauptwerk des Alttestamentlers und Palästinawissenschaftlers Gustaf Dalman (1855-1941), Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina , erschien ab 1928 in verschiedenen Verlagen und hat seitdem mehrere Neuauflagen erlebt. Das Werk verschafft einen Einblick in das vorindustrielle, traditionelle Alltagsleben der arabischen Bewohner Palästinas um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert. Dalman hat damit ein umfassendes Dokument der Volks- und Landeskunde verfaßt, das auch zur Erhellung der biblischen Texte beigetragen hat. Der achte und letzte Band des Werkes konnte von Dalman nicht mehr ganz fertiggestellt werden. Der Verlag Walter de Gruyter legt hier erstmals in einer Edition des Gustaf-Dalman-Instituts in Greifswald den bislang unveröffentlichten letzten Band von Dalmans berühmter kulturgeschichtlicher Palästinastudie vor. Der Band enthält neben dem von Dalman verfassten Text über Geburt, Kindererziehung, das häusliche Leben und das Lebensende im Palästina nach der Jahrhundertwende erstmals ein komplettes Literaturverzeichnis zu allen Bänden, ebenso ein Gesamtregister zu den Bänden I-VIII, bestehend aus Sachregister, Bibelstellenregister und - neu - Register der rabbinischen Zitate. Ein ausführlicher Bildteil enthält Fotografien, die zumeist von Dalman selbst aufgenommen wurden. Die Fotografien des Bildteils illustrieren den vorgelegten Band VIII in seinen behandelten Aspekten. The main work of the Old Testament and Palestine scholar Gustaf Dalman (1855-1941), Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina, known far beyond the area of theology, was first published from 1928 on in different publishing houses and since then has had several new editions. The work provides a view of the pre-industrial, traditional daily life of Palestine’s Arab inhabitants at the turn of the twentieth century. The eighth and last volume could not be finished by Dalman. It is now available for the first time in an edition by the Gustaf Dalman Institute in Greifswald. In addition to the text written by Dalman on birth, child education, everyday life, and death in Palestine after the turn of the century, the volume contains for the first time a complete index of the literature cited in all the volumes, as well as a complete index to volumes I-VIII, consisting of a subject index, an index of biblical passages and - new - an index of the rabbinic citations. One extensive picture section contains photos which for the most part were taken by Dalman himself. The photos illustrate the present volume, VIII, in the areas treated.
