This volume is an eloquent and farsighted call for a new approach to thinking about, producing, and inhabiting architecture. Using a richly conceived architectural history as a means for analysing debates that reverberate throughout the arts and human sciences, Anthony Jackson examines the myths of the architectural profession and in so doing reveals how they have arisen out of particular relations of power in a world shifting from autocracy to democracy. Jackson exposes the inadequacies of old conceptions of architecture as embodying metaphysical properties, and of architects as the sole keepers of this esoteric knowledge. He challenges architects to acknowledge and celebrate building as an expression of the ideals and values of the broader-based classless communities to which they now belong. The less people are excluded from the design process, the more likely it is to be effective in bringing about a human-made environment which enriches the lives of its inhabitants. In examining intersecting ideas about myth, culture, class, and design, the author draws examples from a wide array of architectural styles, ranging from Classical to Post-Modern. The result is a work that is extraordinarily provocative and useful for architects, visual artists, cultural historians, and sociologists, as well as for supporters of all forms of participatory democracy.

Themen: die Reihe der Block der Hof (der umgekehrte Block) die Passage die Zeile der Solitär die Gruppe die "Kiste" (der Shed) Our cities and neighborhoods are composed of Urban Building Blocks and a knowledge of these elementary components is part of the basic equipment of city planning. It is absolutely essential for urban design that one understands their form and structure, their functional conditions, and the differentiation into private and public spheres, as well as the ways they are networked into their surroundings. Study of these city building blocks represents a first step toward understanding, and successfully developing the built structure of the city as a physical and social habitat.Themes are - the row, - the block, - the courtyard (the block in reverse), - the passageway, - the line, - the solitaire, - the group, - the "shed".

First published in 1942, Theodore Fyfe's book on Cambridge architecture was written to 'enable the visitor to Cambridge to realise the value of the Town and University for illustrating the sequence of styles in English architecture'. Including over fifty drawings of both famous and lesser-known Cambridge architectural sights, and a glossary giving clear definitions of technical architectural terms, the book remains a valuable guide for the modern visitor. The Introduction outlines the principal English architectural styles, from Romanesque to Gothic to Renaissance, the periods during which they flourished, and their significant characteristics. Fyfe then analyses over thirty selected Cambridge examples in detail, including a description of the Perpendicular Gothic style as exemplified on a grand scale by the world-famous King's College Chapel - 'the glory of Cambridge'.

Exploited for requirements of defence, navigation, transport, irrigation, and the powering of mills, water has progressively diminished in importance to the extent that the relations between the city, the territory and the water systems have now greatly deteriorated. This book proposes to retrace the nature of the relations between water and the urban landscape, interpreting the shifting of the relations through images. It also analyses the use of water in contemporary landscape design, identifying the conceptual and compositional tools proper to landscape design which can inform and guide future planning.
