Abstract

Japanese residential building has fascinated whole generations of architects. Alongside the strict implementation of design concepts, the small conceptual houses are excellent examples for the demonstration of creative experimentation in terms of spatial configuration, materials and the ability to organise even the smallest of spaces. These houses are like miniature laboratories, clearly showing not only the creativity of Japanese architects but also the treatment of 'the ephemeral' and the various layered boundaries between private and public space. The fast pace of change in Japanese cities has generated an enormous architectural treasure trove for the Western world. This treasure trove will be documented in Small Houses, a book that will also familiarise the reader with the broader aspects of Japanese culture.Small Houses is a book about Japanese residential building aimed at architects, interior designers, students and anyone interested in this exciting and dynamic scene. The book focuses on the small houses, mainly one-family houses. The selected projects are by both internationally renowned architects and by architectural practices that are little known outside Japan. An in-depth treatment will be presented for each project, which will familiarise readers with the cultural and societal context and the particular Japanese way of treating certain architectural elements. The presentation of details that are irrelevant outside of Asia is avoided. The book focuses on existing residential buildings that are represented by images and other architectural graphics such as layouts and sections.

Abstract

"The Future of Modular Architecture presents an unprecedented proposal for mass-customized mid- and high-rise modular housing that can be manufactured and distributed on a global scale. Advocating for the adoption of open-source design based on a new modular standard, the book shows how the construction industry and architectural practice may soon be radically reshaped. By leveraging the existing intermodal freight transport system, global supply chains can be harnessed to realize the long-held promise that housing will be a well-designed and affordable industrial product. We are on the cusp of a transformative change in the way we design and build our cities. Author David Wallance argues that modular architecture is profoundly intertwined with globalization, equitable urbanism, and sustainable development. His book addresses these timely issues through a specific approach grounded in fundamental concepts. Going beyond the individual modular building, Wallance forecasts the emergence of a new type of design, manufacturing, and construction enterprise. Written in an approachable style with illustrated examples, the book is a must read for professionals in architecture and design, city planning, construction, real estate, as well as the general reader with an interest in these topics"--

Abstract

Very small buildings have a special appeal. They constraints of space and cost can liberate the imagination. Most of the project in this book consist of no more than a few key spaces, in many cases just a single space. They are united only by their compact nature, the pleasure that they can provide, and the intelligence that they embody." "A brief introduction is followed by five thematic chapters: Public Realm, Community Spaces, On the Move, Compact Living and Extra Space. Case studies include a park bench that transforms into a shelter in Australia, an inflatable treetop structure for observing rainforests, sleeping tubes in an Austrian park, a movable church in Finland and a suspended office in France.
