De problematiek van een kind heeft invloed op het gezin en de gezinsactiviteiten die worden uitgevoerd. Gezinnen met kinderen met autismespectrumstoornis ervaren moeilijkheden bij hun gezinsactiviteiten. Handvaten voor ergotherapeuten om gezinnen met kinderen met autisme te ondersteunen bij gezinsactiviteiten zijn nauwelijks vindbaar. Hierom is het goed dat bestaande informatie gebundeld wordt. Dit kan ervoor zorgen dat de kwaliteit van het gezinsleven, met de daartoe behorende gezinsactiviteiten, voor ouder en kind stijgt. Via een narrative literature search werd literatuur verzameld en werd gevonden dat het concept family occupations is opgebouwd uit co-occupaties, routines & rituelen en occupational performance coaching. Er blijkt een gebrek te zijn aan betekenisvolle interacties tussen de gezinsleden gedurende de gezinsactiviteiten. Ook wordt de keuze van de activiteit en het verloop ervan, beïnvloed door het kind met autisme. Ergotherapeuten kunnen binnen hun behandeling adviezen geven rond family occupations waardoor ze bijdragen aan het creëren van een sterke familie-eenheid.

In de traumazorg, de zorg voor mensen met acuut somatisch letsel, gaat alle aandacht in eerste instantie naar de patiënt. Er zijn twee belangrijke redenen om ook aandacht te hebben voor diens naasten. Ten eerste omdat de steun van naasten een belangrijke factor is in het herstel van de patiënt. Ten tweede omdat het trauma niet alleen een ontwrichtende werking heeft op het leven van de patiënt, maar ook op de naasten. Het ongeval heeft fysieke, psychische, sociale en materiële gevolgen voor patiënt en naasten en kan hen uit hun evenwicht brengen. Naasten die in deze situatie worden ondersteund, kunnen de patiënt beter tot steun zijn. Medisch maatschappelijk werkers hebben de taak patiënt en naasten te begeleiden bij psychosociale en emotionele problemen die samenhangen met de opname. In hoeverre zij aansluiten op de behoeften van naasten van traumapatiënten en welke baat naasten bij deze hulpverlening ervaren, is onderwerp van dit onderzoek. Eerst is onderzocht wat de behoeften van naasten zijn, door aan te sluiten op eerdere onderzoeken naar de behoeften van naasten van intensive care patiënten, met gebruik van de Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (Molter, 1979). De Nederlandse versie van deze vragenlijst (Kaljouw, 1998) werd aangevuld met items die voortvloeien uit de sociale en maatschappelijke gevolgen van een ongeval. Er werd op twee momenten gemeten. Binnen 24 uur na opname deden 45 naasten mee aan een interview en 26 van hen zijn ten minste 2 weken later nog eens geïnterviewd. Vervolgens is onderzocht wat de behoeften waren van naasten die hulp kregen van medisch maatschappelijk werk, welke hulp zij kregen en de baat die zij daarbij ervoeren. Hiervoor werden diepte-interviews gehouden met 8 maatschappelijk werkers en 10 naasten, en werd dossieronderzoek gedaan. Met de resultaten werd een gestandaardiseerde vragenlijst ontworpen waarmee aan nog eens 33 naasten is gevraagd naar hun behoeften, de geboden hulp en de ervaren baat.
