In deze masterproef zal de hedendaagse beeldtaal op sociale media en de daarbij horende esthetiek onderzocht worden. Meer specifiek zal de focus liggen op hoe de applicatie Instagram de beeldtaal van fotografie heeft veranderd, met extra aandacht voor het alledaagse als onderwerp. Het onderzoek bestaat uit vier grote delen. Het eerste deel zal de verschuiving van analoog naar digitaal toelichten en zal meer specifieke details over Instagram zelf bevatten. In het tweede deel worden de onvermijdelijke gevolgen van de digitalisering meer uitgebreid met verschillende voorbeelden. Hiervoor zijn enkele professionele fotografen die hun smartphone gebruiken voor hun beroep erg belangrijk, meestal is dit gesitueerd in de fotojournalistiek. Die voorbeelden brengen automatisch de discussie van het verschil tussen amateur- en professioneel fotograaf met zich mee en die grens wordt kleiner en kleiner. Wanneer dat deel is uitgewerkt, volgt er een erg belangrijk stuk van de thesis. In dit deel wordt onderzocht hoe fotografie zich ooit als volwaardig kunstobject heeft kunnen vestigen en hoe het alledaagse zo populair werd als onderwerp in de kunst. Na het theoretische deel van Ben Highmore over de esthetiek van het alledaagse, is er een onderzoek naar de esthetiek van de hedendaagse beeldtaal. Vernaculaire beelden zijn hiervoor erg belangrijk en concluderend kan gesteld worden dat een onderlinge invloed van verschillende soorten fotografie de belangrijkste reden zijn voor de onduidelijkheid tussen persoonlijke en professionele fotografie. Ondanks die verwarring, bevatten ze beiden een soort van esthetiek. Het vierde en laatste deel gaat specifiek over de applicatie Instagram en de daarbij horende beeldtaal. Er volgt een selectie van enkele typische fenomenen op Instagram. De term competitive photography wordt geïntroduceerd, wat zeer belangrijk is voor de beeldtaal op Instagram. Ook is er aandacht voor de democratisering van het medium fotografie en ook voor het belang van de followers en de likes. De fotogeschiedenis is ook erg belangrijk voor de hedendaagse beeldtaal en daarom worden er zes expliciete voorbeelden gegeven dat opvallende gelijkenissen vertonen tussen beelden van vroeger en populaire beelden op Instagram. Hierna wordt het begrip anti-selfie onder de aandacht gebracht, wat enorm karakteristiek is voor Instagram. Het gaat over het tonen van the self, maar zonder het gezicht kenbaar te maken. Dat is een belangrijk voorbeeld om aan te tonen hoe Instagram de beeldtaal veranderd heeft. Het gaat niet langer over het fotografen zelf, maar het gaat over de representatie van jezelf op een mooi en consistente manier.

Dit onderzoek gaat dieper in op de ontwikkeling van de conflictfotografie tijdens en na de Arabische Lente in Caïro. Het medium fotografie is de laatste jaren sterk veranderd. Er is een inmenging gekomen met andere media en het is moeilijker geworden om het medium af te bakenen. Dit heeft ook een invloed op de conflictfotografie en de conflictfotografen die naar oorlogsgebieden trekken om er verslag uit te brengen van de gebeurtenissen. Deze stijl van fotografie heeft ook een invloed ondervonden van andere media zoals beeldende kunst, video en schilderkunst. Terwijl de beelden van de protesten uit de Arabische wereld verspreid worden op Westerse Tv-schermen en in kranten, is er ook een andere soort fotografie die zich ontwikkelt. Door technologische ontwikkelingen en de verandering in de manier waarop oorlog wordt gevoerd, is de klassieke fotojournalistiek deels geëvolueerd naar late photography. Foto’s die werden gemaakt tijdens de Arabische Lente wijken af van de klassieke fotojournalistiek en fotografen tonen interesse in de inmenging met andere media. Het doel van dit onderzoek is opgedeeld in drie delen. Ten eerste worden de kenmerken van de late photography beschreven en onderzocht. Ten tweede wordt er gekeken naar de kritieken die bij deze nieuwe ontwikkeling binnen de conflictfotografie kwamen kijken en hoe de casestudies dit verwerken in hun werk. Ten laatste wordt onderzocht op welke manier de ontwikkeling van de artistieke fotojournalistiek een invloed heeft op de conflictfotografie. Deze onderzoeksvragen zullen worden beantwoord via de methode van close reading en de casestudies Nermine Hammam en Moises Saman. Het onderzoek wees uit dat late photography gekenmerkt is door drie verschillende elementen die sterk afwijken van de klassieke fotojournalistiek: het tijdstip waarop de foto is genomen, het onderwerp en de narratief. De kritiek vanuit de literatuur toont dat esthetisering, het verlies van objectiviteit, de postmoderne narratief en de slachtofferrol van de protagonist een uitdaging vormen voor de late photography. Een van de twee casestudies, Moises Saman, reikt via zijn werk telkens een oplossing aan voor elk van deze kritiek, dit is dankzij het feit dat zijn werk zowel in het journalistieke als het kunstcircuit rondgaat. De invloed van de artistieke fotojournalistiek is onderzocht via het werk van de tweede casestudy, Nermine Hammam. Haar werk toont dat conflictfotografie nieuwe functies kan opnemen en mogelijkheden van de fotojournalistiek kan verruimen.

The art world in the sixties was shattered by the advent of conceptual and performance art. Artists rejected aesthetic norms and picked up the avant-garde legacy in their anti-institutional critique. “Every man is an artist” said Joseph Beuys, giving voice to the aesthetic anarchism of the times. The pluralism that dominated this artistic panorama gave way to “endist” theories as well as poststructuralist criticism. As conflicting as they may be, both critical tendencies agree that art is at a crucial turning point. In this moving context, art critics need to reinvent their discourse in order to make it fit the new dynamics of an art world in phase of transformation. This thesis will treat the question of criticism’s social function once it has abandoned its judging role. Indeed, we see criticism everywhere without actually reading it. So why does criticism keep proliferating, and how does it relate to the multiplicity of un-aesthetic objects to which it is confronted? In a race against obsolescence, critics tend to emphasize the “arty” side of their writing by affirming openly their subjectivity and playing with artistic devices. By doing so, they join the team of “artists” and adopt their transgressive drive. The critical text thus mirrors its object in a process of performative re-adaptation. And the result of this operation suffers the same fate as the “marginal art” that was appropriated by the art market and its institutions. The critic’s voice is clustered in an institutional frame that silences it and at the same time legitimizes it. Postmodern art critics are trapped in this vicious circle dominated by “fashionability” and exclusiveness.

What exactly is the landscape in a contemporary art world that is defined by its interdisciplinary and multi-sensory installations? How does landscape art of this caliber urge us to think differently about landscape? What is our relationship to nature and in what way may we consider our chronic fear of global warming to be symptomatic of a contemporary sublime? Built up on a history of landscape art, philosophical considerations of the sublime as a category as well as a semiotic analysis, these are some of the questions this thesis will aim to answer. It considers the terms nature, culture and landscape and analyses their relationship to one another, and how we culturally respond to the changing relationship we have to our surroundings. Focusing on the work of three contemporary artists, this piece of work will analyze a contemporary sublime that is defined by a fear of timelessness, loss of boundaries and chaos which lies beyond our cultural microcosm.

Due to stereotyped thinking, the symbiosis of art and science is considered as unnatural. Ratio can be attributed to science while emotion is crucial in leading the artist. In the initial phase of composing this master thesis, it seemed quite obvious to wonder why the artist would shift from one domain to another and why the scientist would switchover to art. In both questions a domain is left behind and another territory grows more important. After an interesting conversation with Angelo Vermeulen, scientist and artist, and the in-depth study of his personality, we could conclude that this initial question of the research was too polar-directed. It became necessary to look at the case on a more dual way and to take Angelo Vermeulen as a central case that would enclose this thesis. The fact that Angelo Vermeulen brings contrary cases together in a whole, was the reason why the initial research question was reshaped to a new matter where the cross-pollination of the two domains, science and art, already became self-evident. The focus shifted towards the way cross-pollination between different worlds can be achieved and why Angelo Vermeulen uses this working method. By interviewing Vermeulen and studying various literatures, we could define the working method of what we call the three connections. This method was enabled in response to the crisis in the arts, a problem that was outlined by Vermeulen himself. He doesn't rely on the past but focuses on the future. He doesn't operate like a ritualising artist who often refers to traditions from the glorious history of the arts but prefers an innovating way by implementing space navigation in his art. The art of Vermeulen wants to open a dialogue considering the notion space and suggests possibilities for future life in space. Science and art form the basic concept to discuss current subjects that concern mankind. Outlining the notion of science fiction in the past and explaining qualitative science fiction, we could determine a second crisis: the crisis in science fiction. Further questions occurred concerning in which way Vermeulen could offer a solution for the arts as well as for science fiction and how he upgrades both domains to the level where they belong. By comparing the genre science fiction with the repertoire of Angelo Vermeulen we could determine that Vermeulen is a successful author of qualitative science fiction through the medium of art. His artworks are milestones towards the future art, but also towards the future life in space. Keeping the spacecraft MESSENGER in mind, the art works of Vermeulen (Biomodd, Blue Shift, Seeker, Merapi Terraforming Project, BODYREACTOR, H4aC) can be examples of messengers for the future.
