Abstract

The first Polish critical edition of Georg Joachim Rheticus' Narratio Prima (First Account), the treatise on heliocentric astronomy, written in Frauenburg (Frombork), where Rheticus spent two years with Copernicus, and published in Danzig (Gdańsk), in 1540. Georg Joachim Rheticus is known in the history of science as the only disciple of Copernicus and the man, who played a vital part in publishing Copernicus' revolutionary work De revolutionibus, which was to become the foundation for modern science. In 1540 the world first heard about the heliocentric theory of Nicolaus Copernicus. Paradoxically enough, this revolution in astronomy was announced not by Copernicus himself but by Georg Joachim Rheticus, a young Lutheran mathematician of Wittenberg, who published the First Account of the Books "On the Revolutions" by Nicolaus Copernicus. His book preceded the publication of Copernicus' De revolutionibus by three years and became one of the most fascinating texts documenting the life and work of the great Polish astronomer. Rheticus wrote the Narratio prima in Lubawa where he stayed with Copernicus.

Abstract

In the face of the climate crisis, education based on the current scientific knowledge is an exceptionally urgent need. This textbook was created on the initiative of the scientists associated with the "UW for Climate" team, by 16 experts from the University of Warsaw and other academic centers, representing various fields of knowledge, such as physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, economics, psychology and engineering. Thus, it is an interdisciplinary textbook, just like the issue of climate change itself. The textbook is addressed to the university students interested in the basics of knowledge about climate change, regardless of the field of their study, as well as to the high school students and teachers. The individual topics of the "Climate ABC" are related to such areas of school knowledge as: physics, chemistry, biology and ecology, geography and social studies. The textbook also accompanies the online course under the same name offered by the University of Warsaw. The book is divided into four parts, presenting the mechanisms of global warming (part 1), its causes (part 2), consequences (part 3) and actions that can prevent the most negative effects of climate change (part 4).

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Dance, Ageing and Collaborative Arts-Based Research contributes a critical and comprehensive perspective on the role of the arts -specifically dance - in enhancing the lives of older people. The book focuses on the development of an innovative arts-based program for older adults and the collaborative process of exploring and understanding its impact in relation to ageing, social inclusion, and care. It offers a wide audience of readers a richer understanding of the role of the arts in ageing and life enrichment, critical contributions to theories of ageing and care, specific approaches to arts-based collaborative research, and an exploration of the impact of Sharing Dance from the perspective of older adults, artists, researchers, and community leaders. Given the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of this book, it will be of interest across health, social science, and humanities disciplines, including gerontology, sociology, psychology, geography, nursing, social work, and performing arts. Meanings of Public and the Future of Public Services

Abstract

Critically assessing meanings of the term "public", this book situates the emergence and expansion of "public services" within market-based forms of production and consumption. It highlights the potential for making public services more progressive within market societies, but underscores their ongoing capture by private interests and emphasises the inherent limits of reform within a "bourgeois public sphere". The author explores opportunities for more expansive forms of non-marketized public services, examining emerging debates on the theory and practice of equitable, participatory and sustainable forms of publicness that go beyond mere ownership. The book then asks how we can build a robust international "pro-public" movement that juggles universal needs with local context. With a focus on essential public services such as water, electricity and health, the text is global in its scope and written for a broad audience. It will be useful for those interested in social and public policy, public services and public administration, political theory, economic geography, social movements, sustainability and development.

Abstract

In 1980 Froebel, Heinrichs and Kreye published the English-language The New International Division of Labour, trying to highlight the consequences of market reorganization after the crisis of the mid 1970s, which was soon to transform into so-called globalization. A third of a century later, the "fantastic adventure" of market integration seems to have been crystallized by the 2007-2008 crisis, opening a further period of great instability. But the geography of wealth production has transformed radically and appears unrecognizable to the early-80s scholar. In a framework of great social, political and cultural change, China, a country at the time defined as an "economic dwarf", is the second largest economy on the planet and has become its "factory". The standardizing concept of "Third World" having vanished, some former colonial economies have undertaken rapid growth processes, while others have ruinously accentuated their underdevelopment. The traditionally advanced regions, then defined as "industrial", have opened out into trajectories defined, vice versa, as "post-industrial", some consolidating their competitive edge and others sparking lengthy declines.
