Lorsqu’André Alciat ou Pierre Coustau écrivent un livre d’emblèmes, ce loisir studieux repose sur le choix d’une activité utile et morale. Deux hommes de loi s’octroient le plaisir d’un otium litteratum qui se situe en marge du temps concédé à la pratique ou à la théorie jurisprudentielles ; mais cet espace ludique, propice à des jocoseria pour le moins ésotériques, est lui-même pénétré de légalismes. L’écriture d’emblèmes repose sur un modèle épistémique emprunté à la praxis du Droit romain alors en cours de réélaboration. Loin de constituer des témoignages fastidieux d’une pensée fixiste et solipsiste, ou encore une contrainte d’ordre strictement professionnel, les commentaires aux Pandectes et aux autres fragments de Droit romain de la plupart de ces juristes humanistes témoignent avant tout de la perméabilité de cette culture légale et de l’étendue de ses applications. Les commentaires de Droit civil, dont la forme volontiers polyphonique est appelée à restaurer un « matériel complexe » par le biais d’une critique historique et philologique, servent alors de base à l’élévation d’un nouvel idéal de Justice, à la recherche d’images et de symboles forts, les médailles, hiéroglyphes ou emblèmes autour desquels se rallie une communauté active de juristes aussi inventifs qu’érudits.

Emblem books, which feature combinations of images and text with a moral lesson for the reader, grew out of the Renaissance and were most popular in the Netherlands. Enigmatic, erudite, and often pious, Dutch love emblems synthesized the traditions of European visual and literary arts--and in turn influenced architecture, painting, poetry, and interior design for centuries to come. "Learned Love" offers an introduction to this enthralling genre and celebrates the completion of Emblem Project Utrecht, an undertaking that digitized twenty-five of the most representative emblem books. This unprecedented volume explores the delicate network of visual motifs and textual mottos that characterize Dutch love emblems.
