Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca, 1304-1374) worked over many years on his long historical text about the Lives of ancient Roman military heroes, 'De viris illustribus' (On Famous Men). Left unfinished at his death, the text was completed by 1379 by Petrarch's colleague, Lombardo della Seta. Within a decade, 'De viris illustribus' was translated into Italian; and in 1476 the 'Libro degli uomini famosi' was printed in Poiano outside of Verona by the eccentric humanist and scribe, Felice Feliciano (1433-1479/1480). The edition includes a peculiar feature: preceding each of the Lives is a page on which is printed an interlace woodcut border within which, however, no image appears. The present book surveys the hand-illumination of twenty surviving copies of Felice's edition in order to investigate: the Renaissance fascination with the classical past; the artistic traditions of representing Uomini famosi; the technical problems of illustrating books with woodcuts; and the fortuna of the 1476 edition. Two copies contain sequences of heroes painted within the woodcut borders; these heroes provide evidence for reconstructing the appearance of the "lost" frescoes of famous men painted at the end of Petrarch's lifetime in the Carrara palace in Padua.

"This book presents new research by eminent and emerging scholars in honor of Lilian Armstrong, whose extraordinary research has elucidated a vast corpus of imagery previously hidden inside manuscripts and books produced in late medieval and Renaissance Venice and the Veneto. Armstrong was one of the pioneers focusing upon the unique nature of each copy of early printed editions, an approach which has transformed the field of book history. Her studies of antiquarian imagery in books and manuscripts revealed the inventiveness and originality of these works, and that many important classical motifs initially emerged in such marginal spaces before they were canonized in sculpture and oil painting. The contributions by art historians, manuscript scholars, and book historians collected here on the book arts across Europe are testimonies to the fact that Lilian Armstrong's research has been highly influential across disciplines and geographical areas of study." --Publisher's website (viewed August 7, 2023)

"Grand Scale" brings to light rare surviving examples of mural-size prints - a Renaissance art form nearly lost from historical record. The most famous sixteenth-century woodcuts, engravings, and etchings were those done on an intimate scale. Yet artists also worked in an entirely different category of print production, producing mural-size prints that sometimes reached as high as ten feet. This handsome book, which features nearly fifty examples from Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands, explores these multi-block woodcut and multi-plate engraving ensembles as vital contributions to the visual culture of their time. Comprising five essays, "Grand Scale" documents the relationship of monumental prints to the history of prints in general and the phenomenon of making and marketing big prints. The social, political, and religious circumstances surrounding the prints' production are highlighted, as well as connections between printed images and printed texts, and between printmaking and the worlds of mapmaking, painting, the decorative arts, and book illustration.
