Abstract

Marsilius of Inghen († 1396) is one of the most intriguing thinkers of the late middle ages. He combines in his writings different intellectual traditions such as Nominalism and Thomism, which he shaped into what came to be known after his death as the via marsiliana . His works on logic and his commentaries on Aristotle were widely used as textbooks at the late medieval universities and his commentary on the Sentences played a significant role in 16th century Spanish scholasticism. This volume explores the thinking of Marsilius from different perspectives. Part 1 examines the background of his philosophy and theology. Part 2 discusses his writings. And Part 3 is devoted to the impact of his thought. The book contains original essays by specialists on the subject, some of which are accompanied by partly editions from the manuscripts of hitherto unpublished works.

Abstract

Psychology and the Other Disciplines looks at how Aristotelian psychology developed from the medieval to the early modern period, by studying its interactions with other philosophical disciplines, medicine, and theology. The book addresses a wide range of topics, such as the place of psychology in the diverse academic curricula, the influence of theology and medicine on psychology and vice versa. Bringing together specialists in various fields, this volume shows that the transformation from the scholastic to more empirical approaches to psychology was a gradual process. Contributors include: Paul J.J.M. Bakker, Magdalena Bieniak, Lorenzo Casini, Elisa Cuttini, William Duba, Michael Edwards, Hiro Hirai, Matthew Klemm, Gideon Manning, and Nancy Siraisi.

Abstract

John Buridan (d. 1361) was one of the most talented and influential philosophers of the late Middle Ages. His fame extended far into the seventeenth century and underwent a revival in the twentieth century, when the French physicist Pierre Duhem rediscovered his manuscripts and wrote studies about them. So far, very few of Buridan's works have been edited. Two different questions commentaries on Aristotle's De generatione et corruptione by Buridan have been preserved. They originated in his classroom. Neither of them has ever been edited. This book presents a critical edition of the question commentary that survived in the greater number of manuscripts, and which was particularly popular at Central European universities. Abstract

How were the relations among image, imagination and cognition characterized in the period 1500 - 1800? The authors of this volume argue that in those three centuries, a thoroughgoing transformation affected the following issues: (i) what it meant to understand phenomena in the natural world (cognition); (ii) how such phenomena were visualized or pictured (images, including novel types of diagrams, structural models, maps, et cetera); and (iii) what role was attributed to the faculty of the imagination (psychology, creativity). The essays collected in this volume examine the new conceptions that were advanced and the novel ways of comprehending and expressing the relations among image, imagination, and cognition. They also shed light, from a variety of perspectives, on the elusive nexus of conceptions and practices.

Abstract

John Buridan (d. circa 1360) was one of the most talented and influential philosophers of the later Middle Ages. He spent his career as a master in the Arts Faculty at the University of Paris, producing commentaries and independent treatises on logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy, and ethics. His Questions Commentary on the eight books of Aristotle's Physics is the most important witness to Buridan's teachings in the field of natural philosophy. The commentary was widely read during the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This volume presents the first critical edition of books III and IV of the final redaction of Buridan's Questions Commentary on the Physics. The critical edition of the Latin text is accompanied by a detailed guide to the contents of Buridan's questions.
