This book demonstrates the principles of facade construction. Guidelines are suggested for good detailing. The installation procedures are described for the most common materials - glass, wood, steel, concrete, and aluminum. Numerous drawings made specially for the book explain the principles of the individual types of facade which are then illustrated with built examples.

Summary: Energy is everything - and we are used to this in the means of energy reduction for our buildings: climate design and climate engineering is nowadays standard in the design process. The more successful we are in this, the less energy we need to run the building during its useful life (which is good) and we can focus instead on an additional aspect: the embodied energy - the energy we need for the material production and construction process. Interestingly, the reduction in energy used in a climate-efficient building during its lifetime is equal to the energy consumption necessary to produce and install the building. This aspect triggers us to reconsider the design potentials of focusing on less energy in the construction.

The renovation of old buildings can no longer be seen as a necessary evil that costs money and summons inconvenience yields. The recognition is growing that the renovation of buildings and its facades, also called the "envelope", can provide significant benefits. Not only does it improve the quality of living and use, also does it lead to energy savings and an increased value of the building. This makes renovations interesting for owners, users and architects. This book reports on the exchange of ideas between science and practice. This resulted in different strategies for the renovation of the envelope and examples of successful projects.

"Processes of construction are related to available technologies of production and assembly. IT has made a deep impact on design possibilities and the control of production logistics - enabling feats such as free-form architecture and increasingly precise elaboration. Alternately, the idea of Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing Technology provides the chance to create one-off components and elements for architecture. We now have the opportunity to design and construct without the disadvantages of production resistance and assembly needs - to realize genuine IT-driven architecture."--Back cover.

Facades determine the appearance of a building. Thus they have a very important role to play in architecture. At the same time, the building envelope has important functions to fulfill, including lighting, weatherproofing, thermal isolation, load distribution, and sound insulation, to name only the most important. In the last fifteen years, facades have become significantly more complex. For example, "intelligent," climate-active facades use self-regulating systems to respond to changing light and weather conditions. This book demonstrates the principles of facade construction. Guidelines are suggested for good detailing. The installation procedures are described for the most common materials -glass, wood, steel, concrete, and aluminum. Numerous drawings made specially for the book explain the principles of the individual types of facade which are then illustrated with built examples.
