Abstract

Abstract

In order to stabilized BOF slag(basic oxygen furnace) and to achieve high value products, solid SiO2 particles and other materials are ejected into the slag under high temperature. However, an important issue is that the BOF slag cannot be processed in the stabilisation plant due to the high slag viscosity. The viscosity of heterogeneous BOF slag is affected by the following factors: temperature, size and shape of solid particles, proportion and distribution of particles and the rheological properties of molten slags. The goal of this work is to investigate the factors that affect the rheological behaivor of the solid-bearing BOF slag, lower the BOF slag viscosity and propose a mathematic viscosity model for the slag system.

Abstract

An inconvenience in pyrometallurgical processes and furnaces is the refractory wear, life-time and replacements. An important aspect regarding this topic is the influence of infiltration of bath materials on the thermal conductivity of these refractory materials. This infiltration of another phase changes the thermal properties and thus the wear rate. For this thesis, the focus will be on magnesia-chromite bricks. Also, it was aimed to propose a model that predicts the thermal conductivity change of infiltrated refractories. A test set-up is made to measure the conductivity and a model is made. The main conclusions are that a severe increase of the thermal conductivity is observed due to the infiltration. Nevertheless, there is a large variety in the amount of increase between different types of bricks and different infiltrating materials. Also, by just taking into account the changing porosity and the thermal conductivity of the infiltrating materials in a model, the results from the experiments could not be obtained. This indicates that some other aspects should also be considered which should be further investigated. If this thermal conductivity is known, this would be an asset to the study of refractory wear and can contribute to process optimisations. It is an important step towards in-situ measurements of refractory wear, which would allow scientists and engineers to better study and understand the influence of different operational parameters on the wear rate of the refractory lining.

Abstract

When galvanized steel scrap is recycled, zinc containing EAF dusts are produced. The dominant recycling route for these dusts is the Waelz process, which produces a Zn rich dust suitable for Zn metal recovery. The residue of the Waelz process is used for landfilling or aggregates.nbsp; Recently several alternative processes have been proposed and some were also industrially implemented. Limited work has been done however on the recovery of iron from the slag and the use of high calorific value wastes to also include energy recovery. The aim of the current project is to investigate the potential in developing a pyrometallurgical treatment of EAF dusts making use of wastes with a high calorific value and generating a ZnO material suitable for Zn recovery, liquid metallic iron and a slag to be used in a high value application.
