Postcolonial theory has become enormously influential as a framework for understanding the Global South. It is also a school of thought popular because of its rejection of the supposedly universalizing categories of the Enlightenment. In this devastating critique, mounted on behalf of the radical Enlightenment tradition, Vivek Chibber offers the most comprehensive response yet to postcolonial theory. Focusing on the hugely popular Subaltern Studies project, Chibber shows that its foundational arguments are based on a series of analytical and historical misapprehensions. He demonstrates that it is possible to affirm a universalizing theory without succumbing to Eurocentrism or reductionism.

Een inleiding tot het economisch systeem dat zo dominant is dat de media het nog nauwelijks benoemen: kapitalisme.Het zou een vraagstuk uit een examen wiskunde kunnen zijn: hoe lang moeten de 300.000 kassiersters van Lidl werken vooraleer ze het vermogen van hun grote baas Dieter Schwarz evenaren? Meneer Schwarz zit op een berg van 37 miljard euro. De vrouwen aan de kassa verdienen gemiddeld 1.300 euro per maand.Zelfs wie het nieuws maar van op afstand volgt, begrijpt: de economie is een universum van haaien en jakhalzen. Maar om de vinger echt op de wonde te leggen heb je een breder kader nodig. Daarom schreef de Amerikaanse socioloog Vivek Chibber een inleiding tot het systeem dat zo dominant is dat de media het nog nauwelijks benoemen. Kapitalisme voor beginners, ondertussen in meer dan tien talen vertaald, valt uiteen in drie delen. In het eerste legt de auteur uit waarom kapitalisten en werkende mensen niet dezelfde belangen hebben. In het tweede zoomt hij in op de rol die de staat speelt in dit systeem. On sait à quel point la réception des études "postcoloniales" aura été tardive et compliquée en France, et comme règne encore une certaine confusion à leur sujet. Un des principaux mérites de ce livre de Vivek Chibber est de partir d'une analyse minutieuse des textes de plusieurs théoriciens indiens issus des Subaltern Studies et devenus des figures incontournables du "postcolonial" - tels Dipesh Chakrabarty ou Partha Chatterjee - pour démonter radicalement non seulement les dérives de ce courant, mais surtout ce dont elles découlent, c'est-à-dire plusieurs de ses thèses fondatrices.La profonde originalité de la démarche de Chibber tient à la fois dans le défi central qu'il lance aux "déconstructions" et "essentialisations" postcoloniales et à l'utilisation plurielle et ouverte qu'il fait de la théorie marxiste, démontrant ainsi - tant dans la forme que dans le fond - sa validité et son universalité. Ce livre et les très nombreux débats qui l'ont accompagné marquent un tournant décisif dans l'appréhension des problématiques Nord-Sud et dans le développement d'une théorie globale du capitalisme et de son dépassement.
